Transfer private reg between my 2 cars
« on: July 07, 2019, 07:59:39 AM »
Hi.I hope this is the correct section for my question.
I have owned my Jazz for about 2 years and it has a private reg. on it.
However, although my wife will continue to drive the Jazz,we are going to also purchase a Honda CRV and caravan in the near future.
When we purchase the CRV,I wish to transfer the  plate from the Jazz to the CRV.
I realise I may have to wait for the CRV V5 to be returned to me in my name, but can the transfer then be done online and is there a charge involved?
Many thanks for your help.

You can do it all on-line:

Firstly you need to take the private plate off your Jazz: https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/take-private-number-off

Then when you get the CR-V you can assign the number https://www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assign

No doubt there will be a charge for both.  I think it is £55 to register a new license and £80 for the transfer but I may be wrong.

If you are buying the CR-V new, then the dealer will be able to assign the personalized plate I believe.

I paid £80 for the transfer of my reg to the Volvo and to the Jazz. I have no costs listed for retaining it from either of my old car, so I think that must be FOC. They reassigned the original number to the old cars, so if you have the original plates?

The car will be reassigned the original registration number:

https://www.carwow.co.uk/guides/running/number-plate-retention-guide

Although a friend's brother back in 2001 transfered the private reg off his S reg Peugeot and they tried to issue him with the then current 51 plate. :D

The link is not quite correct, in almost all cases they will re-assign the original plate. However, if the plate has been sold in the meantime, and some older ones are, you should be assigned an age related, different plate.

£80 to transfer to another vehicle, or to put on retention. No charge to transfer from retention onto another vehicle.

Other half has just been gifted a reg, don't like to look a gift horse in the mouth but 80 quid and a set of numberplates every time she changes car  ???

If you retain the old plates and shift the personalised plate over you only have the £80 cost. Unless, as you say, you are not reissued the original number. Luckily I always have been.

You still have to buy a set of plates for the new car, unless you are very lucky with the screw holes!

Don't use sticky pads, too easy to pinch.
