How is the repair going? Sparky Paul posted some great links. Have you gone that route?

Sorry to hear OP.
I decided to buy an aftermarket cat before ours gets nicked. £69 on ebay with fitting kit, supposed to have 5yr warranty....
Need some advice re fitting it. My mechanic mate is out of action for a while, is it something a non spanner type bod could do on a drive or is it best to book in at a garage and get it fitted. If its worth me having a go any tips and advise please?
Thanks.

I got the garage to do mine. I was actually getting exhaust middle box replaced but it would not separate from cat so I replaced that too. It could be a pig on a jack but garage ramps made it a lot easier.

If the cat's been stolen, you need to check where it's been cut - you may need a middle pipe as well.

You usually need both lambda sensors too, as they disappear with the cat.

Lewo still has his cat. He is doing a pre-emptive change.

Sorry, I got cross-hobbled there. Why would you swap the cat unless there was something wrong with it?

I doubt it will prevent theft. After the shiny newness has worn off, the aftermarket cats are not obviously different externally... once they crawl underneath, they will still cut a cheap one off and weigh it in with the rest.

Really...didn't realise that. I'd read a few threads about changing it before it gets nicked so I've jumped on the bandwagon.
I've not actually looked at the fitted cat so can't compare the both but yes maybe you're right in that they will take it whatever it is.

Your insurance company will almost certainly write the car off, the cost of repair to the insurer will probably be more than the car's worth. There are currently loads of otherwise perfectly good mark one Jazzes going through salvage auctions minus their cat, some lovely low mileage ones too.

It's possible that an aftermaket cat may put off some particularly clued up thieves, but I still think your average numb nut will take them all and weigh them in. Although aftermarket cats are only worth a small fraction of genuine ones, they are not completely worthless.

The only thing you can do if you go the replacement route is fit a guard or alarm, one of the many DIY solutions suggested on here, or at least get some 'cat alarm' stickers in the windows.
