Is it okay to let the air pressure release by opening the fuel cap at random times or just do it only when refuelling?
Is there any pluses or minuses to the fuel economy either case? Tia!

I never open my fuel filler cap unless I am refilling the tank. I always get a good "whoosh". Currently getting 59 mpg.

There is no reason to release the pressure in the fuel tank. It will be engineered to run like that for various reasons.
(It's not air, it's fuel vapour).

yeah, I've always wondered about the woosh. First car I recall doing it.
-
All my recent cars have done it.

It is quite normal. don't worry about it.
