The Jazz handbrake inefficiency has been commented on before.

I am on my third Jazz, two GD's and now a GE and the handbrake has not been a cause for concern on any of them.

My only comment would be that when pulled on hard the lever feels very spongy and does not inspire confidence but it does work on quite steep hills.
I also leave any car in gear but that stems from also driving automatics that are left in 'Park' as well.

Vic.

I think I remember reading that you should step on the foot brake firmly whilst applying the handbrake.

Always leave the car in 1st gear wherever you park - a handbrake cable can snap at any time - and anyway it is just good practice and if everyone did it there would be a lot less 'accidents' cause by handbrake not holding.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
