The infamous EGR valve problem - part 2

Have a 2008 GE 1.4 EX which is giving me a headache at the present time.Driving in a town recently I was nearly side swiped when the car stalled driving across a raised roundabout and last night when I garaged the car I heard the engine idling erratically.
 Are these the symptoms of a dirty EGR unit or do I have a different problem?
  If  a dirty EGR unit is confirmed by the Forum can I remove the centre' shaft' with  a magnet?
