What are the symptoms of a damaged suspension and how much would a new one cost?

A damaged suspension could be any of a few dozen things. From a light knocking due to a worn drop link costing £20 to a snapped rear axle costing hundreds. If you suspect you have a problem what symptoms are you seeing/hearing?

Front driver side under the bonnet, getting a sort of crunching bumping thud sound when driving at slow speeds

Sounds like possibly worn-out rubbers. Have you had a look at them? I trust you don't have massive corrosion around the top mount!
