Vehicle Excise Duty and Labours plans.
« on: December 02, 2019, 02:24:40 PM »
Today on Politics Live the Shadow Rail minister was on and they were talking about Labour's plans for reducing rail fares. Their plan is to use VED to reduce rail fares instead of spending on roads. As we all know VED just goes into the tax pot and hasn't been used for roads for decades. What concerns me is that the plan is to reduce private car use and drive motorists onto the railways, so that the increased rail revenue can fund the fares and ultimately nationalisation.
So expect to see a substantial jump in Vehicle Excise Duty under a Labour government.
And this on the day that SWR staff started a 27 day strike! I'm sure Labour would step in to stop that if they were in power.

The reduced rail fares would only apply to England so it wouldn't be very popular in Scotland and Wales to increase VED to pay for it:

I don't think it would be very popular in England and Wales either. Especially in the north of England.

I pay my road tax to better my use of my car, not to subsidize rail fairs.

And it doesn't even do that. It could as likely be used to refit a submarine or pay for Brexit (thought I'd get it in before anyone else hijacked the thread).

Robin Hood robbed the rich to pay to the poor.

Labour intend to rob the poor to pay the rich in London and the South East.

Because  that's what socialists do...they need to be able to afford their lattes you know, pooor dears...
and of course London votes Labour...

Considering the Labour party has been hijacked by city based Latte drinking types and has abandoned their core voter ( although still happy to accept money from unions ) it is no wonder they now plan to rob the poor to pay the rich..

There is no mention of increasing VED, it's money the Tories have reserved for road building while Labour said they would use it to lower train fares:

Labour say these changes would cost about £1.5bn per year. The funding would come from a wider change planned by the party to create a sustainable transport fund from the revenues bought in by vehicle excise duty, or VED, which is based on emissions.
While income from a particular tax is not normally reserved by the government for use in a certain way, known as hypothecation, under an existing Conservative plan, from 2020 this would happen for VED, with the income reserved for road building and maintenance projects. VED is due to raise £6.5bn in the 2019-20 financial year, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Cancel HS2 white elephant and the £150 to 200 Billion it will eventually cost would go a long way to upgrading existing network ( 'for the many not the few' LOL ) and lowering fares.. with a bit left over to upgrade every junction in UK to have traffic lights to slow down the traffic that much people will be glad to use the train ( hang on isn't that is what is happening at the moment - replacing traffic islands with traffic lights and slowing things down / creating queues,  and when the lights break down the queues disappear and traffic flows smoothly again )...

Old man Steptoe ( AKA Comrade Jezza ) is trying his best to alienate his core supporters - I reckon he does not want to win the election and be in the position where he actually has to make decisions and do stuff,  he would rather be on the opposition benches acting as the cork in the 4rseh0l3 of progress.

I didn't say there was. I said expect to see a substantial jump, which will happen once they find there is not a enough spent on roads to pay for Labours plans. I have been voting for 50 years and have learned to read between the lines.
