Delivery miles anyone?
« on: July 26, 2021, 10:57:10 AM »
Searched but can't find a reference to the miles to expect on collecting new car from dealers.  Must be somewhere!  What was yours?  Thanks.

I've never had a 'delivery mileage' car where the mileage is in double figures. It usually is just the mileage on and off transporters, ships, around airfield storage and around the dealer site. i Have even had a couple of 'nearly new' or 'low mileage' cars with a massive discount on brand new where the mileage has been under 25 miles.

Mine was 19.  I know that the storage pound is 2 or 3 miles from the main garage premises.

When crossing the Avonmouth Bridge on the M5 you can see the new car storage depot in the docks, it is vast so it is possible to add another couple of miles if that is where your new car has arrived.

My 2020 Jazz had 3 miles on the clock when I received it. Part of that mileage would have been a trip to the nearest petrol station.

Once upon a time, yes, but recently the factory has been producing only the Civic and, as of next week, nothing at all as it closes at the end of this month.

I can’t remember the exact figure on collecting my new Crosstar but it was a single digit, so less than 10 miles.

Mine had only 1 km on the clock when I picked it up, which I found extremely low… must have been the last one on and off the boat  :)

Mine was 6 miles, but that includes a trip to a local petrol station to fill it up before it was handed over -   :D

I do not know of a definition of delivery miles, pre-sale  storage conditions may be important, I recall a country walk in Surrey nr Guildford  and coming across around 40 new Austin Rovers cars stored in a Wood,  Protected in factory wax but mud everywhere half way up the wheels,  I lived near a VW distribution compound, workers would transfer  brand new cars from a rail delivery point to the compound, workers were obviously on piece rates, new  cars were driven flat out, workers would take a car home every night on trade plates, they would be driven flat out along the main road from the centre to the nearest town which mocked the running in of a new engine.
Some makers set the car mileometer to read a high number which rolls over to zero during a road test, I think it was Renault or BMEW

My experience of “delivery miles” has typically ranged between about 10 and 20 miles although I would have preferred it to be less!

One deal that failed to materialise was when I tried to order an Audi TT from my local dealer.  The salesman found one in Audi new stock he could reserve.  I said I would be happy if it was perfect and the mileage was below 10.

His response was a new car can have up to 300 miles and he wasn’t prepared to either guarantee or even check the mileage before reserving.  Needless to say I walked away.

Not sure whether the “300 miles” is enshrined in law somewhere or he made it up either way there is now way I would take delivery of a car with that mileage unless I was buying it as pre registered or similar with a huge discount.

My 07 plate Sport had 20 miles.
My 8th gen Civic had 16 miles.
My 53 plate SE Sport was pre-reg and had 7 miles on delivery, 4 on the day I test drove it the week before.
