The downshift also works in D when on closed throttle for engine braking if you wish.

Wow! Great tip

The CVT has a torque converter from early 2011 onwards. Honda petrol engines thrive on revs so don't be afraid to open the throttle and also make full use of the 'S' position on the gearbox selector this makes a surprising difference especially in your example of entering a roundabout.

Exactly right. The S mode is also excellent for engine braking going down any steep hill. Indeed the difference, in this situation, is night and day.

I sense an unwillingness to use the S mode amongst many Jazz CVT drivers but it transforms off the line acceleration. I don't use it much but in situations where an extra bit of oomph is needed, it's excellent maintaining the lower gear ratios significantly longer than D mode.

I always use S mode for entering roundabouts from a standstill and any situation where fast reactions are needed.. eg crossing a busy main road with limited gaps.. Much quicker than a kickdown in D  and safer.

Can you shift between D and S modes whilst the car is moving?

I have read this post very closely and found it interesting, many different, automatic/CVT variants have been mentioned.
Would any of you like to do you a top two/three/five (up to you), of the variants?
A sort of TOP Of The Pops, for Honda Jazz CVT's.

The CVT gearbox has only seen one major change in its lifetime when the starter clutch was replaced by a torque converter clutch when the CVT was reintroduced in early 2011. The electronics may have changed but little else as far as I am aware. Don't get confused by the introduction of the i-shift gearbox that was introduced in late 2008, it wasn't a CVT. It wasn't popular.
