Removing private number plate & replacement plates
« on: June 04, 2021, 05:36:38 AM »
A relative may be looking to remove their personalised number plate from a car.  The process seems straightforward, except they don't have the original number plates to refit to the car.

DVLA says it can take 4-6 weeks for replacement V5C document to arrive....

Without the new V5C, how does one go about getting a new set of plates made up?

Light bulb moment: Ask DVLA....

You cannot change the plate until you get the V5C. You may not be issued with the original number. Someone may have bought it.

But the instant you request the number to be taken off (online) it's no longer valid to be used on that vehicle. Nice catch 22.

I did look into this when I was about to change car, as I had a nicely memorable plate on my previous Jazz. The timescales involved were too short.

Used DVLA webchat this morning.  Quote:

When you complete an online retention, the V5C will arrive within 3-5 working days. If you opt for an email confirmation, you will be sent an electronic authorisation certificate (v948) in which you can use to get the plates made up whilst you are awaiting for the V5C document to arrive.
