Title: Bonnet, Plastic Section......
Post by: Dayjo on May 18, 2018, 11:26:37 AM
Does anyone have a favourite remedy, for the water staining. On the bonnet's plastic section?

At one time, I would have used Armour All. What's the modern chemical?

I have used (and still use) Car Plan No1 super gloss. It leaves a consistent Matt finish on plastic. The bottle says it can be used on paint, plastic, and glass, but not windscreens. I bought mine in ASDA when it was reduced from its normal £10 price. You only need a little to treat a whole car.

you really need a dedicated wax containing black pigment - I use this on cars and motorbikes. I restores the
faded plastic to a proper black colour and I only use it once a year.  The armor-all and similar are just clear
silicone.  I do sometimes use armor-all matt finish on dashboard to try to get rid of screen reflections.

Simoniz used to do something similar.

I used the stuff I mentioned to remove water marks from the bonnet plastic on my Jazz, it also prevents any further staining. I would be wary of using a pigment or wax on plastic.

Thanks Chaps!
The car is one month old, today. Gently washed and Auto Glymmed, two weeks ago.
Now, after second wash, today, I'm disappointed with the black section.......

However! After someone's, earlier recommendation on here..... A bottle of Car Plan No1 super gloss, has just been delivered!

I'll let you know, how well it revives the black plastic section.

Well..... The 50/ 50 revival test area, left a lot to be desired....  :(

The Auto Glym polish, had to be removed, first. But, what with?

Brake/ clutch cleaner left a white stain. Methylated spirit, grey stain. Nail polish remover, did nothing.

The winner was WD-40. It dissolved the polish, leaving a silky black sheen.

After a wash/ dry, and application of No1. All's well......  ;)

Another lesson learned!

I have just had a look at mine and it has none of the white deposits which showed so clearly in your photo. I can only assume that these resulted from some treatment applied by the supplying dealer.

Anyway I'm glad that you found a resolution to this problem. I have for many years washed both the painted and plastic areas on my cars using Autoglym shampoo without any similar  problems and I made sure that the dealer did not apply any other treatments prior to delivery.

I don't like dark coloured cars, Honda's dark red, dark blue, dark grey, black, and even silver are so dull. Dropping yellow for this years models reduces the choice as well. I like to be seen and a dark coloured car can dissapear in fog, rain, spray, and poor lighting.

How can Milano Red be described as  dark?
I chose Milano Rde to be seen, if it's good enough for the Fire Service, then it's good enough for me!

Don't forget Post Boxes, I think Milano Red is a really classy colour. Not like the Audi/VW Red which I find garish.

On the black trim I use Black Shine Restorer from the Pound Shop, it works fine for me.

I would not call Milano red fire engine red, certainly not our local fire engines! More like dirty post office van red. :-)

Renault Flame red is a good red.

Which is exactly when you should have DRL,  headlights / fog lights on  :-X

I most certainly have my car well illuminated, it is all part of the "Be seen" bit of road safety. Unfortunately some people are domestic appliance drivers who only care about getting from A to B. Many people who have not driven HGVs, buses, etc don't realise that an unlit, or car on sidelights can dissapear in the spray they generate on a fast road and may not be seen in their mirrors. A silver or grey car just makes the situation worse.
