Gearbox Oil Change - Important or not?
« on: September 07, 2019, 04:24:39 PM »
Hi all,

My Jazz is well over due a change of the gearbox Oil. Is this an important service item or am I ok leaving it? I'm aware of the relatively common issue of the gearbox bearings failing and becoming noisy.

Thanks

change the oil, for what it cost can save you a fortune later.
these things dont give many problems but lack of oil changes seem to be one of the issues that do

Put some of this in a very good quality oil for gears.. you will need 1.5 litres.

I recently changed my gearbox oil.
You will need 1.6L of Honda mtf oil. This comes in 1L bottles. The drain plug is located close to the driveshaft & the fill plug above it. Make sure you can undo the fill plug before removing the drain plug or you will be in big trouble!
The crush washers are different sizes. The drain plug is the same size as the engine oil drian plug. The fill plug is larger at 28mm O/D. I used a 5/8" PVC hose along with a 5/8" 90 degree barbed angle to refill. I found it easier to remove the battery & tray to allow easier access to insrt the fill pipe from above after faffing about trying to insert it from below. There are youtube videos to help.

Fill plug Crush Washer is 28mm O/D, 20mm I/D & 2mm thick.
Honda part number: H9410920000. £0.85 each.
Drain plug crush washer 22mm O/D 14mm I/D X 2mm.

Changing the oil has made a noticable difference to the gearchange. I can almost flick between gears with my little finger now. So, I would recommend changing it.

When I changed my transmission fluid, I'd been warned that the old fluid can exit with some force.   They weren't kidding.   The first few seconds were fine, but then it resembled a scene from The Exorcist as the fluid suddenly went horizontal.

I soon had a hose over the outlet to direct the flow into the container.   I use a garden hose section and a funnel to re-fill.

If I recall correctly you need a 17mm socket for fill plug ( full hexagon socket is better then the 12 point ones as less likely to round off the nut ) and the drain plug is 1/2" square ( you can use the end of a socket wrench directly ).  As said above remove the fill plug first as if you drain oil out and cannot get fill plug out you are up the creek without a paddle......  with car on the level you just need to pour oil in until it starts to dribble back out,  the bottom of fill plug is the oil level...
