Tyre upgrade
« on: April 28, 2016, 12:16:05 PM »
Hi everyone.

First post so be nice. I have a honda jazz 03 plate with 25k mileage. I recently listed it for sale but realised that I really don't want to get rid.so I decided to give it a bit of tlc.

My first port of call is to make sure I put some nice tyres on it.i do around 100 miles a week with mixed motorway mileage and about town.my mpg used to settle at 42 but is now firmly at 36mpg. I changed 2 tyres recently at part worn place so that may be the cause of the drop in mpg.

I wanted to know what good quality make tyres you would recommend. I was thinking of going for alloy wheels as well.i read you can get civic wheels fitted in another post.i think my jazz is a standard edition so if maybe I got the alloys from the sport edition, would these be a like for like fit.

Sorry if my post sounds daft.im a total newbie.

Thanks

2003 with 25k mileage or is that 125k?
If it is indeed 25k the car could have some issues as even 42mpg doesn't sound good let alone 36. When was the car last serviced? I think a fresh change of oils and filter along with some longer trips such as your 100 mile a week shouldloosen things up nicely. Used tyres alone wouldn't make such a huge drop in mpg unless they under inflated. 32 front, 30 psi back is recommended.

Alloy wise you can put on some SE Sport and Sport  15" alloys. You can go aftermarket or fit wheels from 2nd Gen but the tyre sizes are different so make sure you put on correct tyres on otherwise your speedo will show incorrect reading.

Cars that don't get driven much or only do short journeys tend to pack up quicker than cars that do reasonable mileag

Yes it actually is 25000 miles. Cars absolutely fine, I sometimes have to listen close to see if the engine is still on when stationary in traffic. It was owned by an old lady until now who did on average 2k miles a year. She had it serviced 5 times in that period.

In terms of tyres.how do I check the tyre size/spec?

Can you also direct me to some places where I could buy some used alloys from?

Many thanks again

I always think you should put  buy the best tyres that you can afford.
I had a 56 plate 1.4se and ran it on Bridgestone 185x55x15 and if memory serves me right it would average at least mid 40's much better on the longer journey with a constant speed.
Try looking for alloys on eBay etc.

Best place for used alloys would be eBay. Specs on wheels can be found on wheels-size.com just select suitable car from drop down. Two sizes were available for Jazz MK1

175 65 14
185 55 15

Yeah of course engine would be mint but things like exhaust need to go up to temperature to operate at optimum level. If you have had it services all good but if not, get it done. Cars are meant to be serviced by mileage or time frame whichever comes first so 5 services in 13 years doesn't sound right.

I have a 99k 53 plate and I regularly get "indicated" 52mpg

Yes you can find them on the tyres. Being a standard Jazz as you say it is, most likely you will have the 14inch steel wheel with 175 tyres. Alloys are almost all 15 inches

I checked my tyres and I have 175 65 R14 tyres on it.

Checking this on wheel-size.com, these tyres are standard issue for the 1.2l model whereas mine is a 1.4l.

For the 1.4l wheel-size.com lists the following:

185 55 r15 and 195 50 r16

Am I right in thinking that I may have the wrong standard tyres rims on my wheel? That they come standard as 15 inch for the 1.4l rather than the 14 inch ones I've got on?

Also does this mean that 15 in alloys will fit fine on my jazz?

Like I said, I'm a total newbie so appreciate a response.

The tyre size and pressures are on a plate on the drivers side front door frame rear pillar.

14 inch ones were standard across the range before the facelift arrived in 2005 so your wheels are absolutely correct unless yours is a SE Sport which came with 15inch alloys.

15 inch will indeed fit as long as they are meant for Jazz and tyres are correct size. 16 inch we're never offered from factory and although will fit but with 45 profile tyres they will shake you and your car to pieces
