Title: Which Jazz to buy?
Post by: mikeycollins on February 14, 2020, 01:37:26 AM
I have an option to buy a year old ex demo Jazz for £12500 or a new Jazz @£16620.

The new car has 4 years 0% finance plus 5 years free servicing. I am very tempted by the used car but of course I am missing out on interest free credit plus free servicing. plus there is a years deprecation. I can borrow at 2.9% apr and servicing  over 5 years would cost £1100.

Which would you gals/guys go for?

Thanks

4k price difference, less 1800 in interest and 1100 in servicing taking us down to 1.1k difference. Factor in difference in residuals and its close.

If I could afford it, I'd go new

I too would opt for the new car. You do not know how the ex-demonstrator it has been treated in the past 12 months.

Have a look through the Honda approved used cars list at https://usedcars.honda.co.uk/en/used-cars/approved-cars/all-brands/all-models?warrantyProgram=22 . There's this https://usedcars.honda.co.uk/en/used-cars/approved-cars/honda/jazz/13-i-vtec-se-5-door-vdb2btm (an SE CVT with 4k miles) for example with a 5 year service plan for £13,990. And that's the starting price before you do any haggling. The service plan should be the standard Hondacare package which is valid to use with any dealer but it's worth checking as I read of a situation where a dealer was offering their own service plan (and then closed).

An ex-demonstrator should be a good deal - the dealers need to shift them and I would expect them to be better looked after than a private vehicle. Once you've figured out what is a fair price then either/both go back to your dealer asking for a better price or contact some of the others. Demonstrators often include extras (as a minimum the mats) for which you have to haggle to get included with a new vehicle.

i am in same position, however i dont think there is such a thing as interest free,if yoU ARE paying top book price, you can get a very low miles for at least2000 less. dont forget new jazz coming this year, hold on for6 months and price will dip for current models.

With the new model coming out in the summer, I would go for used, 3 yrs old. They are reliable so should be ok. You can use independent garage for servicing also of it's over 3 yrs old.

Discounting or other incentives on new stock due to the pending arrival of the Mk 4 may well explain why the margin between new and one year old used may have shrunk. The latter will still be priced based on what it cost but prices will have to be trimmed.

If thinking of new then consideration needs to be given about whether to wait for the new model. There's a fair amount of info here https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?board=162.0 . It appears that there won't be a stunning improvement in the fuel economy but the torque from the electri motor will make the vehicle much more responsive.

Something else to note is the current new Jazz doesn't have room for a spare wheel under the boot floor. This changed fairly recently so if having room for a spare wheel is a consideration then used will be better (but check before committing).

I think the older Jazz models with less 'automation' will keep their value better because a fair proportion of people like to be in control of the car, not the car in control of them. Given the demographics of Jazz owners in UK they should offer a cheaper model without bells and whistles ( but of course some are mandated now by various directives ) but at least be able to switch things off without a degree in computer science being required..... and MPG is less important if you don't cover many annual miles anyway,  and the depreciation on newer cars is steeper.

'Cars Aren’t an Investment – Buying a new car is like flushing money down the toilet. Vehicles depreciate, and I prefer allowing someone else to eat that depreciation before buying'.

On the MK 3 the stop/start, the parking sensors, the lane departure warning and the ABS can all be turned of by simple push buttons.  I agree that they must have a cost, but despite my having driven for 60 years, I welcome them because they reduce the risk of me hitting things or people, and reduce pollution.

Never known a car where ABS can be turned off, the anti-skid / VSA  and traction control yes,  but not ABS.  Brothers have cars with bells and whistles but it is like a pilots pre take off check list to turn them off before every journey, lane departure - off, auto braking - off,  auto headlights - off .............etc. etc.

Yes - my mistake;  VSA not ABS can be switched off by a button.  Too many initials!

I wonder if the author of this post will let the forum know how they got on?
