4 new tyres needed, recommendations?
« on: August 26, 2023, 08:33:26 PM »
I want to get 4 quality tyres for my 2008 Mk1.
Preferably year round tyres, I wont be switching during Summer/Winter.
I don't mind paying a little extra for good ones, but obviously I don't want to waste my money unnecessarily.

Recommendations gratefully received. I am very low-mileage, so mainly around town with the occasional A-road trips of no more than 25/30 miles.

Thanks all.

I had Yokohama Bluearth 4S (four seasons) on mine and they were superb.

Thank you Jocko, lovely to hear from you again.
Did you settle well into your new abode, two years now?  (me too, also 2 years in new abode)

Thanks. Yes, it is nice living here except I don't get many miles and most of what I do do is city driving.

I am very happy with my Goodyear Vector 2 all seasons .       Michelin Cross climate also get good reviews but I've never used them.

If you want a more budget conscious alternative I was happy  with the  Kumho Solus (HA31 I think) that I ran on a Corsa.   The Goodyear are  slightly better, but at a premium price  .(But shop around)

I remember when you were renovating the present abode, you had a fair journey up and down between the two. If I recall you treated us to some great dash cam footage over the bridge etc.

Yes, I was filling my tank two or three times a week. Since buying the Fabia and putting it on the road in January. I filled the tank on the 3rd and I have only had to fill up twice and it is almost the end of August.

Some great economy there Jocko.
Is the old Jazz still on the road (as far as you know)?

Reviews suggest Michelin Cross Climate 2 are best: especially in snow. I have CC 1s and on 26k miles: still 6mm on front 4mm rear so 35k miles life.. which offsets price.

Similar with me Jocko. Filled in January, May and, two weeks ago, in August. Might need one for fill before Christmas.

Yes. I don't know if it was pleased or disappointed. It went elsewhere for an MOT, didn't require half the work my MOT station quoted, and was subsequently repaired and is now taxed and back on the road.

This might be considered a hate crime by some but I've had great service out of a few Chinese brands in recent years.

The Jazz was wearing 4x Jinyu tyres for around 7 years and were actually on a set of alloys that were previously used on my old Hyundai i20 for a couple of years. I expect they did 40,000 miles on the front end, before being replaced last December.

The two front Jinyu tyres were replaced with ATS house brand Hilo Genesys and have given good grip etc.

I've had ATS Hilo Genesys tyres on my KIA Ceed SW and I've been really impressed with them during almost 6 years of ownership.

That's really good lifetime, especially for an all-season tyre. Makes me consider CCs for the new summer tyres. I have Michelin X-Ice Snow for the actual winter.

Would recommend Michelin X Climates. I had these on my recently departed Merc 320CLK. I bought four new tyres nine years ago and the front tyres still had 3/4mm left on them ( both rear tyres had to be replaced due to punctures during those nine years ) after 50,000 miles.   Mind you I drove it like a nun and it was used for long journeys only.  Wonderful ride and especially sure footed in heavy rain.
