Its been a while since I have driven a Mk1 Jazz, but the switch on the ignition barrel detects the key being inserted into the lock barrel. This is connected to the meter, whether it turns the meter illumination on or not I cant say, someone with a similar grade/model Jazz may be able to answer that.

From your description, I dont believe you have a problem and it is completely normal and perhaps you just did not notice it previously.

I don't think he has a problem either, that's exactly how our 2008 Jazz behaves.

1. When you unlock the car with the fob, the interior light comes on.
2. When you open the door, the instrument backlight illuminates at half brightness.
3. If you insert the key, the instrument backlights fade up to set brightness.
4. Remove the key and the backlights fade out to off, re-insert and the backlighting fades back up to set brightness. You can repeat this as many times as you like.
5. Turning the key to position I (accessory) illuminates the rest of the dash backlighting, including radio.
6. Turning the key to position II (ignition) illuminates the ignition lights and starts the self test.

All normal, certainly on the later (06-08) Chinese built cars. There are a few differences electrically to earlier models, so it is possible that the behaviour is also different.

thats exactly how mines working .. the dash iluminations fade on when keys inserted and slowly fade out when key is removed and yes interior lighting comes on when unlocking the car with the remote key button and slowly fades out when locked . plus just checked it the dash does iluminate when the doors opened then if you shut the door it stays iluminated until you lock it then it instantly goes out..
funny im sure it was different when i first got it . maybe the glitch was at first and now its corrected itself ??

It sounds like it's all behaving normally. Perhaps it was daytime and you didn't tnotice it illuminating?

Mine is a Japanese 06. It is also an S, so that may make a difference.

it was deffo only coming on with the ignition . but yes its all a lot funkyer now lol.. all i have left now is this light intermittent chaffing (scrapping ) noise when i turn right only.. just started last weekend .. doesnt do it all the time..
although took it into my garage today they couldnt find much wrong .. its had new pads etc .. but they also changed the new tyres and wheels from the back to the front .. maybe the vibration of the air gun on the hubs could of joggled something . that fixed the dash lighting ?  thanks sparky anyway

From my manual:

On some types, the instrument panel
illuminates when you open the
driver’s door, and the gauges
illuminate when you turn the ignition
switch to the ON (II) position.

No mention of detecting the key.

The circuit diagram for the Mk1 doesn't show a key detector. The Mk2 diagram does.

This is how my Jazz behaves and is completely normal, at least for facelift SE and Sport models. S models use the same instruments as the pre-facelift models.

There definitely is a switch to detect key insertion, at least on some models.
