Possible aircon relay failure? Symptoms? Testing?
« on: February 07, 2023, 07:20:53 AM »
We've likely got a Yuasa battery failure. Totally flat twice within a fortnight. Optimate recovering it now and a new battery on order. It's right on the limit of or just over its 5yr warranty. However I've noticed on here that an aircon relay failure can flatten the battery too.

Any symptoms other than a flat battery that would suggest this? Any tests I can do on the relay - I have a multimeter but am an amateur dabbler, no expert. How do I identify the relay?

I don't want a new battery ruined if it's something other than end-of-life that's causing the failure.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

If the relay is stuck on the air con clutch is permanently engaged. I believe that you can see whether or not the clutch is driving by viewing the end of the compressor, with the engine running. If it drives with the air con on and doesn't with the air con off, the clutch and relay are fine. if it drives with the aircon off, the relay is stuck on.
