I see fracking is now back on the cards but with a different safer strategy.
Let's be careful out there !

Not the right thread for that. There is a discussion on energy sources thread somewhere.

I'd just like to say that I didn't want to start another thread like the one on generating power.

My intention was to promote a bit of lightheartedness based in the 1970s footage on Blue Peter of a man powering a car with anthracite, as a result of the oil crisis from the early '70s.

April 1st?

Edit. Nope looked it up it was on the 3rd March
During WW2 vehicles were run on "Producer Gas"  the solid fuel was heated and the gas collected for fuelling a car,  the late Alex Moulton CBE 1920 - 2012  described in his autobiography   the gas producer system he made for his  Ford Y-type, his solution to petrol rationing

Not really  21st century technology.

https://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2011/11/gas-bag-vehicles.html

Not 21st century technology, but if it works why not, it is better than freezing to death with this ludicrous  Net Zero future thanks to our prime minister and her husband.
No oil no gas no log stoves no boilers,Oh yes heat pumps Ureka, however no electricity is looking very likely as well and all this upheaval for s.d all.
The future is looking very bleak for us all if And when Putin decides to use his 21st century technologies.
It will make all this Net Zero crap useless in the extreme.

I hope and pray that we do not all disappear in a second.but no one wants to talk about the Russian bear in the room.

Until the powers that be wake up and make us as power self sufficient as possible I agree.

We need existing power generation or we face a very dire future.
Let's be careful out there !

The government is only paying lip service to all this "green crap."
They are still hand in glove with the big oil companies.

No producer gas available now. Good job too. (remember the smell of gas works)
Range of ~50 km (30 mls) maximum speed ~30 mph fuel consumption  equivalent of ~ 10mpg.
Not particularly aerodynamic or aesthetically pleasing.
Would have difficulty conforming to NCAP safety ratings and emission standards.
Difficult to fill. (Not as easy as plugging in EV overnight.)

Trouble is governments should have been planning and legislating for moving away from fossil fuels for decades instead of thinking only as far as the next election or in Mr Johnson's case the next week or next emergency, whichever comes first.
Edit. I'm giving him too much credit. Legislating retrospectively to cover his own previous indiscretions and blunders.

Not only fuel but food- 50% is imported.
No much point in being warm but starving.
The Government is basically ignoring UK agriculture:  and we are all vulnerable to food price shocks or worse, unavailability.(think Ukraine wheat)

Good point

Aren't some farmers paid to 'not' do certain things. Let the land lay dormant.

All this house building on arable land needs to stop. We can't just keep on building. We are full.
Let's be careful out there !

50% of our food is imported because we insist on things like tomatoes and strawberries 365 days a year. We want Italian pasta and French cheese, Polish ham and Irish butter. The consumer dictates where our food comes from far more than the government does.

..... We are full.
Nope. Plenty of room, otherwise we wouldn't be granting so many work visas.

"There were 277,069 work-related visas granted in the year ending March 2022 (including dependants). This was a 129% increase on the year ending March 2021 and is 50% higher than in the year ending March 2020."
https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/immigration-statistics-year-ending-march-2022/summary-of-latest-statistics

We have control, we have sovereignty, it's what "we" voted for.

.............. or not.
