Title: Brodit mounts now available for Mk4
Post by: sportse on October 25, 2021, 01:25:03 PM
I’d been hoping they would release these, I’ve always had them in previous cars:

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicles/Honda/Jazz%20Hybrid/2021.htm?steer=rhd

I’ve ordered one - it puts your phone just to the left of the infotainment screen, so will get the best satellite/phone signal plus it’s in easy view/reach should you want to use the phone screen as well for a second screen/app.

I’ve previously run an app on the phone, at the same time using CarPlay for music/the screen.

I'm interested but their website doesn't explain how the phone is held onto the clip.

I built my own :

https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=13618.msg107040#msg107040

Last 2 pictures, post #10, are the finished mount

My solution has hidden wiring. I'll hang off till I see this mount with an active mount installed.
There probably will be a way of routing it through the glovebox and out just above the front USB

I'll post some pictures once I've fitted mine with mount. It's been despatched so should hopefully be arriving this week.

I was worried about the lid of the top glovebox catching the mount, but it looks like it should just be ok.

I went out and had a look at mine.

There is a route from the glovebox to under the USB.

Now I don't want to put a dampener on things but Brodit designed a proclip for the 9G Civic. It had a similar thin bent over bit that was supposed to clip into a gap between 2 panels within the vent. On mine that gap was almost non existent and over the first bump the bottom bit fell out of the gap under the weight of the phone. The clip just didn't go far enough into the gap so easily came out.
I refitted it a few times and it kept falling out.

Instruction No 2 here : https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicles/Honda/Civic/2013/654757.htm

The MK4 seems to have a similar style top fitting that goes into a gap. I had a look at the gap for the top mount on mine and there's not enough gap for a really good 'clip'  so I'll be interested whether it's solid enough with a phone attached.

Now arrived and fitted, it was very easy.

Kremmen was wondering about how it would mount at the top of the clip - test fitting, it did sit proud but when you fit it properly there is a click and the gap widens slightly - enough for the mount to slot in and the adhesive pad to stick on top:

The mount has two adhesive pads - when fitted correctly, the edges hold the clip in place and the adhesive pads secure it:

I had a fairly short cable I could use, it just required looping around the back of the mount and I then used two cable pads to fix it under the dash - you can't see these from the drivers seat view:

Here is a side view as well - the mount is fairly flush to the top glovebox.

It doesn't affect passenger legroom much at all, as for many people their legs would be under the bottom of the mount. For me, I can place my leg to the left or right of the mount comfortably.

I had mine mounted as far to the right as it would go, it just brushes the lid of the top glovebox when opening/closing it:

With a longer cable would it go into the glovebox via the right side, without snagging the glovebox operation ?

If so, there is an invisible route from the lower glovebox to just under the USB port,  behind the power socket.

Yes, I managed to get a phone cable to the right of the glovebox and it still closed fine.

I can feel the gap underneath the usb sockets, but couldn’t see where you feed the cable through from the lower glovebox?

Yes, tricky, you'll need a non metallic probe and go careful.

I tend to use the top cover from some small trunking, cut to size. The sticking out bit here :  >> Trunking Example <<  (https://www.screwfix.com/p/tower-upvc-white-self-adhesive-mini-trunking-25mm-x-16mm-x-2m/64026?tc=DX2&ds_kid=92700055281954475&ds_rl=1249401&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1rKu8uzq8wIV2pTVCh3YJAMhEAQYASABEgLnwfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)

Then I cut a small notch to take some string, then the cable.

After some deliberation I decided to follow sportse's lead and go Brodit.

It is possible to semi hide the lead for an active mount :

Hi Kremmen,
a curiosity but what is that tool you put in the usb socket?
a Voltmeter?
Do you think there may be battery failures in the car?
Thanks for the info.
(Sorry for the mistakes, I used Goole Translator)

I'm finding that the Brodit top bit only just clips into the tiny gap/crevice it's supposed to. As a result the top sticky pad wasn't making contact.

That resulted in the top bit sliding to the left as it's not lined up properly so hindering the top glove box.

The fix has been to file about 3/16" off the left side top section and put 3 layers of 3M so it sticks.

It now seems solid.

I know I'm going to regret this but:

Wouldn't it be easier to just use Android Auto or Apple Car Play?

Unfortunately not for me.

I prefer to play my music rather than listen to radio stations and I have a bespoke bluetooth phone app that reminds me of speed cameras.

My music needs the 'connected' USB slot and the speedcam app performs pseudo phone calls to transmit over the car audio system.

I did ask about performing 3 actions from 1 phone but I assume from the replies that no one knows.

Brodit mount removed, gone back to my DIY mount.

Had my first passenger since fitting the mount and the first thing she did was whack the mount and phone with her bag.

Not surprised because the proclip, angle adjuster and mount made the whole thing stick out quite a long way. I tried removing the angle adjuster but then the top glove box wouldn't open.

It's not a great place for the mount - I'm surprised brodit didn't put it alongside the screen as they did for Corolla:

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicles/Toyota/Corolla/2021/655453.htm

I have to watch passengers getting in so they don't hit it with their knee, but when you are sitting down in the passenger seat it doesn't affect things too much.

I don't use my top glovebox, but have found that I can still open it, but it does rub slightly against the mount.

That's a better solution.

However, I don't need my phone so 'in your face' though.

Those mounting positions rarely show the unsightly dangling lead that some, me included, don't like.

I had the same experience !
My previous car had a mount on the RHS of the steering wheel, much more practical.

I'm currently building a new mount to go down by the gearstick. My first attempt was just a quick let's see how this works.

Same design but with slightly different dimensions. May have it finished tomorrow, Thursday.

I'll photo it later but it's basically the same as before but the front bit, that sticks up to hold the proclip, is about an inch higher. Plus I've anchored the foam to a wider 5mm sheet of plastic in more places. I'd previously used 3mm that had a tiny flex.

The basic construction is complete. This is before the nuts have been Dremmel'd down and before the felt trimming.

Countersunk and ready for felt (I'd previously over cut the plastic for another job so had to be joined) :

The side that I'll be attacking with the Dremmel later. The lower nuts are squashed into the foam so will be flush :

Top view :

Measurements, note the new one has an angled top :

The foam and plastic joined with measurements :

..... and I did have some help :

Once it's trimmed and felt applied the mount will be attached and cable hidden from view :

More later when fitted .....

I prefer to play my music rather than listen to radio stations and I have a bespoke bluetooth phone app that reminds me of speed cameras.
My music needs the 'connected' USB slot and the speedcam app performs pseudo phone calls to transmit over the car audio system.
It was suggested above by another member by if CarPlay ‘could’ do these functions. This is my experience:

Since settling into the Jazz, I’ve accepted use of Apple Maps (which is 500% better than it used to be) vs Google, because it’s fully integrated (bonus if you have an Apple Watch as it pulses ‘turn left’ or ‘turn right’). You have access to your own playlists on Apple Music (accepting you may not have this or want to subscribe, other players are available!)

What I do like in this setup, it tells you when there are speed cameras coming up, how many traffic lights to your turn, etc (also showing turn distance countdown on the instrument dash) and all the usual navigation aids/replanning.

Possibly you have ‘owned music’ on a device, however if the above works for (anyone) I’ve been really impressed on the level of integration (it’ll also read out WhatsApp messages and let you reply by voice) and sound quality is vastly better than ‘just’ radio. For me I use it wirelessly, but you can of course also run it wired. Equally with downloaded music.

Following on from my WIP post on the previous page my Brodit project is now complete and fits perfectly.

In position, solid as a rock with the cable hidden underneath that runs to the rear USB :

And is raised more than my last one so there is no plastic to plastic anywhere near :

Had to get rid of my brodit mount in the end - it’s fine when it’s just me driving but eats into passenger space too much as it’s too low. Also likely to hit their knees/legs.

Have replaced it with a vent mount:
