Jerking and RPM issue cvt jazz 2004
« on: May 17, 2023, 01:53:06 PM »
Hi
I have a 2004 Jazz CVT and recently it has started to jerk when in 1st gear. RPMs seem to be going up and down. If I change to Neutral or Park I dont get the issue. I also notice a bit of a rattle to exhaust and when accelerating some kind of whistle sound which Im sure I havent heard before and it doesnt seem as powerful when accelerating
I changed CVT oil and it hasnt made a difference. I also cleaned EGR valve and also disconnected EGR Valve to see if it helps but it hasn't. spark plugs were changed last year only around 3000 miles ago. I inspected them and they appeared to be clean as did ignition coils. Im not sure what else it could be. I inspected the exhaust and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it i.e no leaks. Also to note I have an aftermarket catalytic convertor which is coming up to 3 years old now as my original was stolen. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Check for an air leak at one of the small bore rubber pipes around the inlet manifold. perhaps split or the end perished.
Did you change all 8 spark plugs?

Yes I changed all 8 spark plugs. I will have a look around the inlet manifold for any splits on the rubber pipes. Is it easy to access?

They are all fairly obvious and to the rear of the engine.

Just to provide an update I've checked the pipes around the inlet manifold and can't set any damage to them. All look intact. Any other suggestions?

It could be the transmission that is juddering. Sometimes a change of fluid is not enough and it needs a flush and change (in your case a second change). before doing anything though, check the engine mounts, especially the one at the rear of the transmission.

Here is a video of the issue. During the video the gears changed from P to D and then to N and back to D and then P

It definitely looks like it's moving a lot more on the mounts than I'd expect for simply engaging and dis-engaging drive. As the others say, mounts would be my first port of call.

Thanks. i did remove the battery and its base which helped me see one the mounts. Two rubber pieces are off the mount but not sure if this is how they are supposed to be as they seem to be same size. Also I cant seem to locate the other mount behind on the same side (left rear). Is it visible from engine bay?
