Title: Jazz Hybrid Back on the Cards
Post by: RichardA on July 12, 2008, 04:16:51 PM
Honda will make a Jazz hybrid after all. After denying any plans to develop a hybrid version of the Jazz, Honda have seemingly performed a U-turn. The Jazz hybrid is back on the agenda as part of Honda's expansion of it's hybrid project, which also includes a new 'affordable' five-door hatchback hybrid, a hybrid sports car based on the CR-Z concept, and a new version of the Civic hybrid. The new 'hatchback hybrid' is set to be priced at around £16,000 and Honda expects to sell 200,000 examples worldwide per year, thanks to the car's cheaper production costs compared to the current Civic Hybrid. The redesigned motor and battery will be re-positioned under the boot. Sales of this standalone hybrid model are set to start early next year.

Sales of the Civic Hybrid have risen by 25% year-on-year, despite the Civic Hybrid being based on the JDM saloon with automatic transmission only, in a county which prefers hatchbacks with manual gearboxes and with a love-affair with diesel cars. The news comes in the same week that The Sun newspaper revelled that rising fuel costs may have contributed to a 25 week waiting list for the Japanese-built Civic Hybrid and extended waiting lists for the Toyota Prius and VW Polo BlueMotion.

According to Car magazine, the Jazz hybrid will follow the CR-Z coupe - itself not due until 2010:

• New Global Hybrid, on sale spring 2009
• CR-Z Hybrid, on sale 2010
• Jazz Hybrid, follows that
• Civic Hybrid, follows that

Also, Car says Honda will use diesels for larger cars (Accord, etc) and hybrids for smaller models like the Jazz. So does that mean will be no Jazz diesel after all?

I cannot see Honda developing from stratch a 80-90bhp-ish diesel anyway (the average power output for a supermini diesel) for the Jazz, seeing as the market is limited to Europe and the possibility that the new 100bhp 1.3 iVTEC will get almost 60mpg.

The only other possible outcomes are to develop a 1.6-litre 115bhp diesel which can at least be slotted into the Civic or FR-V, although that's too overpowered for most diesel buyers at this end of the market. The other option is to buy-in from outside, like when Honda used the 1.7-litre Isuzu unit in the previous Civic.
