I purchased a refurbished pair from Blackvue on eBay for about £200 and used a local mobile installer to fit them, cost about £100.

I bought my 2018 Jazz secondhand, and it came with a Blackvue DR750S-2CH dashcam fitted to front and rear. I have never had a car with a dashcam before, so I have no experience of what is good, bad or average.
I find mine gives good video images - numberplates on cars are clearly readable. It seems to record in units of about 1 minute and save them to an SD card. When the card is full it starts to overwrite earlier data - but the SD card is 64GB and holds a lot of data.
Extracting video from the dashcam can be a bit of a pain - The SD card is stored in the front dashcam - you have to bluetooth a mobile phone to it, scroll through the saved data, decide which bits you want to copy to the smartphone and then you can, if necessary, transfer from the smartphone to a PC. Alternatively, although it is a bit of a fiddle, the SD card can be removed and slotted into a PC which makes it much easier to analyis the images on a PC screen rather than on a small smartphone screen.
When I first got it, I did not realise that these dashcams can also record sound, so the first time I played it back as well as the view ahead and behind, I got myself and Mrs FarNorthJazz conversing. It was fairly easy to switch the sound recording off to save any future embarassment !

Consider having the sound on because there may come a time when its prudent to talk about what you are seeing and having it recorded.
There have been incidents reported where a number plate has been 'shouted' which has proved invaluable as the closing speed made the number plate fuzzy or at night when you can see the plate but the dash cam struggles.

My front and rear dashcams are powered by rechargeable battery packs. This sort of thing,

I plug both cameras in before I leave my drive and unplug them on my return. This means both cameras are running all the time my car is parked at the supermarket, hospital or where ever. I am retired so my car is not sitting somewhere all day but if I did I would just unplug them and reconnect before driving home.

I have the vantrue e2.
It does front and rear and is nice and discreet, it connects to my mobile to download anything which saves a massive faff about.
They are fairly easy to fit yourself using a fuse piggyback connector. Shouldn't take longer than an hour to fit and any mechanic should be able to fit tbh it's not a specialist job.

After my wife was rear shunted by a driver who then drove off I researched Dashcams and decided on Blackvue having their local electrician install it for me.
I have not needed it since but its useful insurance should it happen again.
Small, discretely fitted, and as has been said above excellent image quality
I agree its a bit of a pain to access the data, but how often would you need to do it anyway?
-
I find it a bit bizarre that with all the cameras the car is equipped with, why dashcam functionality isn't built in.

Maybe its because in some countries privacy laws forbid their use. Huge fines in Austria Luxemburg and Portugal. Not illegal in Germany but officially unwelcome, and footage cannot be used in court to prove guilt or innocence - even if it identified a murderer.

Privacy gone mad then, protecting criminals

I agree. You cant have cameras spying specifically on peoples privacy in their own garden etc, and perhaps some limitations on putting it on the internet etc, but I have no objection to cameras recording stuff that anyone legitimately in a public place would see anyway with their own eyes. Simple. Dont do stuff you shouldnt.
Interesting op wants dashcam front and rear. Fair enough, but is the prime intention to prove your innocence in any crash? Useful if it does.
But they are also useful to view footage of your own driving. With hindsight and more time for a critical analysis do you think you spotted every potential hazard ? And early enough. Should you have allowed more space when passing those parked cars ,slowed down or done other things better? etc
Even experienced drivers would benefit from this . We all still make mistakes.
As an addition to this try watching you tube videos of advanced drivers, often police, doing a voice commentary as they drive. 'Dog on the right , but its on a lead'.etc. You will realise just how many potential hazards they spot, and just how far ahead they look for them. This gives more time to react and plan. How does your own driving compare?

... which is one of the many reasons I took (and passed) the Advanced Driving Test (https://www.iamroadsmart.com/courses/advanced-driver) and recommend that everyone at least gives it a try. Find out how really good (or not) your driving is
-
Just the same as the IAM test. You need to look well ahead and at random the examiner will ask 'what was the last sign we just passed' ? You also had to give a commentary when asked.
I stuck with a front Viofo A119V3 single channel dash cam as I wasn't prepared to poke wires through to the back. Plus, quite a few have issues mounting on a hatchback. The front dash cam will show your driving, whether you braked hard, reversed, or whether you were rear shunted via the dash cam geosensors.

My rear dashcam is mounted on the back screen by a sucker. The Jazz was fine, there was a large clear area to attach it to but the Fabia has heater wires the full height of the screen so the sucker has to straddle them. It's okay for the most part but doesn't stay attached as long as it did on the Jazz. I have to re-attach it about once a month.

Thank you verry much everyone !
