Transmission error Honda Jazz 2009 automatic
« on: December 03, 2023, 11:26:46 PM »
Hello All,

I need some urgent advice, I have Honda jazz 2009 Automatic transmission, it has some 80K miles on it, about two months ago, one fine morning I tried to start but it gave me a ⚙️ sign on display and did not turned on, I take keys out and insert again and it started just fine, then two weeks later it happened again, this time, I had to take keys out for a while and it started just fine, then few days ago it again showed ⚙️ sign, my neighbor who is also a mechanic, removed battery for half an hour and then it started just fine, now a week ago it stopped, gave me ⚙️ sign, I tried removing battery and all stuff but it's not starting up, my neighbor has checked with a gadget and he said battery and charger is fine, it is actuator of clutch that needs replacement, I took it to a transmission garage and they are asking for £1200 saying that gearbox will need replacement, a new one will cost £500, £100 oil and £600 labor and they are only giving me three months guarantee.

What should I do?

You've mentioned actuator so assuming this is the the semi-automatic iShift as opposed to 'automatic'?

They have been problematic over the years but most owners seem to get away with just actuator and clutch replacements

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places familiar with these boxes and a Honda dealer is often your only choice
Let's be careful out there !

Thank you Kremmen for your quick help on this, the gear is yes iShift, can you tell me your best guess if full gear change is 1200 then how much would be actuator and clutches? Just for an idea. I am thinking if I should take the risk and get only actuator and clutches fixed for now.

As I understand it, the ‘automatic’ gearbox is actually a standard manual box, with the gear change and clutch operated automatically by the actuators.
So, if all the gears can be engaged and drive as normal, ( no peculiar noises) then I see little point in changing the complete gearbox, as to my mind, the fault is in the actuators and/or the control system.
Having said that, only you can decide whether 80k miles and the general condition of the car, warrants the cost. I guess a  few members would say, at 80k the car is just ‘run in’.  ;D
I did have a 10 plate I-shift as my 1st Jazz, but could not get on with it, so changed very quickly to a CVT.

There are gearbox specialists around and I think rather than pay £1200 I'd be phoning around to find one

Hard work  ut maybe worth the effort

Hi I had problems with the i-shift, if you look back on my posts Feb 2018, you will see a mechanic called Daniel replcaed my clutch actuator for around £350. Honda wanted £1800! Then it went again few years later in September 2020 and the gear box actuator went in Feb 2022. But the gear box didn't need to be changed. Only the clutch was replaced in Sept 2020. It a driving school car and covered 130k miles. My son has been using it since last Sept and touch wood is ok. He does only around 3000 miles a year.

There's another guy call Terry in Hounslow Motors Ltd He is on YouTube but he charges around £700. Daniel, he is based in Northampton. https://www.civicjazzishiftrepairs.co.uk/contact/

Daniel has stopped work due to health issues over a year ago

He used to travel to you

He was an iShift expert

Sorry for late reply, I checked around in Bradford and there was just one other garage that would do automatic gearbox and they were busy till mid January, so I asked the mechanic who had my car to fix it for £1200, he said he would be replacing gear and clutches, now after almost 3 weeks the car is still at garage, he says he has changed clutches and gearbox but the ECU is still faulty and the ECU he ordered, would arrive in week of 16th Jan so the car will be ready by 20th Jan... It will cost be £1300 total, I know it's a bad decision but I am pretty good in making bad decisions.. and I don't know many people around here.. plus when I asked him to give my car back so that I could take it to someone else.. he demanded £1000 for his time and work.. keeping in mind that car is still not fixed and if I pay him 1000 then I would still not be able to drive the car, I decided to pay 300 more and get it all fixed from him.

So just to update on the ECU, its been 3 months now, the mechanic who is a well known transmission garage in Bradford (at least by Google) has still not found an ECU for gearbox, he mentioned twice that an ECU is been found but every time it was not compatible, the then mentioned that another one is available for £500 so the total cost will be £1700 which is obviously too high, now he is asking me to pay him £1000 and take my car from his garage (even that it is not fixed) and that I should look myself for an ECU and when i find it, he will replace it for an additional £200.

I have looked at local scrap yards here in Bradford and couldnt find any..

do I have to pay him ? i understand his perspective but he told me it would cost £1200 to get this fixed and now after three months he is still not able to get it fixed and i still have to pay him ?

attached  are ECU pictures, can someone please guide me where to find it

Speak to Citizens Advice Bureau for legal advice. It's a shame it has come to this . Would you be able to find some thing on eBay?
