Title: Adverts
Post by: Neil Ives on November 24, 2022, 09:17:34 AM
Why is this forum suddenly plastered with adverts? Halfway through someone's post. Really?

I'm using Opera on my tablet and Firefox with Privacy Badger and UBlock Origin on the PC.

No adverts here  :)

Yes, really.

Adverts should only appear at the top and/or bottom of the page. The settings have now been tweaked.

Unfortunately, due to rising costs I will have to start inserting adverts into the forum. Google has been using its own algorithm to work out where best to place the adverts but it appears not to be very reliable. It keeps putting ads where I explicitly asked it not to, so I suspect it treats each individual forum topic as a different page. I will need to experiment with the settings so the adverts may repear then disappear or move around the page from time to time. I might even set it up so that only guests (members that are not logged in) see most of the adverts.

I'm on a forum for my classic motorbike that seems to have the same framework as this one. The owner just asks for some donations to keep it going.

...Adverts are fine, inevitable, just not in the middle of posts as you mentioned  :o

Would more be collected from a small donation from forum members than from the ads?
Say £10 a year. Unsure how many would want to contribute though...

I have heard it said that ad blockers reduce the revenue a site gets, indeed there are some sites that don’t allow access unless you disable the ad blocker for (allegedly) that reason. Is that actually true? Is Google (or any other ad serving system) able to detect that ads are not being seen and reduce the payment to the site accordingly? If that is correct, and noting that RichardA says...

... then widespread use of ad blockers seems likely to affect future viability of the Clubjazz site. That would be a pity. It’s a different story on sites where the ads seem to be intended to maximise profits, but on this one where the ads are needed in order to fund the site then I have no problem with just ignoring them!

At the moment I am not seeing adverts on this forum using my Android tablet. I've done nothing that I'm aware of to cause that. My browser is the Android default, so Chrome I guess.

I checked my Android phone; also no adverts.

At this moment the adverts are only on the homepage as has been the case for many years. I only get paid when someone clicks on the adverts.

Compared to other forums our running costs are low due to the fact we use a shared hosting package and the low traffic.

I have just clicked on an advert. Spend it wisely. One of your Xmas brussels sprouts has my name on it  :-*

If they pester me and my wife ends up buying that kitchen  I shall want the sprout back . :P

No such thing as a free lunch.  But please not back to ads mid posts. I'd ad block it to death.

The adverts were never ment to appear mid post but due to the nature of Google's ad algorithm it kept putting them there even when I asked it not to. I don't think it plays nice with the complex nature of how forum pages are served.

I might try one at the bottom of the page with maybe another one between the first and second posts for guests (not logged in).
