Is this the known gearbox fault or something less worrying?
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:08:17 PM »
I've got it booked with my mechanic but he can't fit me in until next week. I have a 2003/53 plate Jazz S.  I'll try and describe in detail as best I can:

When it's stopped in nautral it makes a grinding (like metal on metal) noise with a kind of chugging sound.  When I put my foot on the clutch it stops.  When it's moving it makes the grinding and chugging noise in low gears and again stops if I put my foot on the clutch.  It's a lot better when the weather is warm and I would go so far as to say it almost stopped during our heatwave but now it's wet and miserable it's started again.  It drives fine though, there's no jumping or anything.

Can anyone advise me what this probably is so I can prepare myself?  Thanks in advance for any advice  :)

P.S - Sorry I've just realised I clicked to post this twice, I can't work out how to delete one  ::)

sounds like clutch plate or thrust bearing.

If the clutch is pressed and the noise disappears than it`s indicating an input shaft bearing problem(worn out).

Thanks for your replies, the mechanic said it was the common gearbox bearings problem.  I'm not sure whether a 2nd opinion might be of benefit?
