Brake Pads Cost and Labour
« on: February 16, 2024, 08:27:21 PM »
I bought my Honda MK2 2nd hand, and wanted to get it properly checked out by Honda. I don't know any trust worth garages near me.

The main issue is the rear brake pads are worn, fitted incorrectly, the passenger side retention clip missing at the rear and driver side rear brakes are binding. They quoted me £1300 to sort this out.

Now, I don't know much about cars but I feel with parts and labour, I am definitely being overcharged. What should the upper limit of that be? I won't be able to do this myself though so I will need to take it to a garage.

With regard to finding a good garage, have a google about and look at reviews. Honest John website has a good garages guide that may list in your area.

So, how much should it cost? Type you reg no in to the likes of autodoc.co.uk or eurocarparts and it will give you parts prices.

I've replaced the rear discs and pads on my Jazz. Purchased Pagid brand parts from CarPartsInMotion via ebay who I use often, and paid c £70.

If you've a rear brake binding and it cant be freed off, which is unlikely, then a new caliper will be requred. Brake fitting kits are c £10.

Is £1300 dear? Too right it is. Discs and pads fitted should be c £220, at least that is what Protyre quoted for front brakes on my car last year. Fitting kit, well they shouldnt charge to fit as they have to come off anyway. Replacement caliper? Certainly an hours labour max.

Just my opinion, and I HTH.  :)

The manual if you want to see how things work is here https://hondafitjazz.com/manual3/index.html

Replaclement is not super complex. Threads on here (search facility) will show how it's done, or you've Youtube to search.

£1300 is approx £1000 too high.

Easy job, parts available  with wide range, nothing complicated.
But a new Honda sold caliper is £250ish so could be £600. (cheaper ones are available).

Way too expensive.  I have done similar jobs myself   DIY and it should be well within the competence of any professional garage.    These may initially quote for  using after market pattern parts  but I have often been given the choice of the cheapest available  parts  or  paying a bit extra for a well known OE quality maker  . (who are the actual manufacturers of original brake parts used by some car makers  but not necessarily Honda ) If you ask they might quote a price for using Genuine Honda parts.  This might cost more and  take them a day or two  to obtain   but probably still significantly cheaper than £1300  :o .

I thought that was a ridiculous amount. I guess it's similar to the kind of situation with phones. If you buy a phone and you get a warranty, you get that invoice where it cost about the same price of the phone to fix but because it's under warranty it get's waived. Probably the same situation with the car as I took it to Honda without a warranty.

Definitely going to look around for a couple garages in the area who can get the job done for significantly less. At the end of the day, just want to be driving safely and smoothly.

I am leaving the country this summer for other work opportunities so I want the car in the top condition before I sell it off. And I plan to do another 10,000 miles of travelling before I leave too.

Just for comparison, we were in need of rear pads two weeks ago when the wifes mum had a Stroke and we had to get up to Lincolnshire quick. As the wife was driving home from work to collect me she hears a metallic grinding from the rear brakes, The only place open on a Saturday afternoon charged me £120 to replace the pads and I know that was dear as the chap knew we needed them done quick.

The quote is very expensive.
Either - Find a garage that will fit parts for you and get a price for labour only then hunt around on eBay, order the parts and get them to fit them. I had a rear caliper binding and bought a Febi caliper for £80 on eBay. I had this fitted along with Bosch discs and pads and a new slider kit for the other side and the labour was £60 (Cash)  The Discs and Pads were about £65.  So £205 all in.
The other option you could try is going through eurocarparts and when you get to checkout it gives you the option of booking a garage to fit the parts and it shows you the labour charge.
