Random Voice Messages / Random Beeps
« on: January 20, 2024, 03:30:23 PM »
Just lately, I've been getting a surfeit of random warning voice messages "Warning pothole ahead"; "Warning vehicle at side of road ahead" are two main ones. The pothole one only started two days ago and although I've had the vehicle warning twice in the last year, I've had 5 (FIVE! in the last two trips.

Where do they originate (Sat Nav and Radio are off), and how can I control them?

Are they linked to the random double beeps (with me message) that are driving me crazy that again have restarted in the last couple of weeks after a few months of peace?  I don't mean the warning you get when, say, you are travelling at 32 mph when you enter a 30 limit (that I SOOO wish I could turn off.. and yes I have checked the manual, but my cars control options do not match the manual entries), these are, as far as I can tell not only random but also completely pointless as no message appears.

...Sounds like Waze sat nav to me.
Is it running in the background?
The beeps are probably going over the speed limit warnings.. although I don't remember them being double.

Can't be the car because the built in SatNav is 'dumb'

It has no live traffic or road condition connections
Let's be careful out there !

I don't have Waze, and they are occur when well under the speed limit.

...Well they are the phrases and sounds from Waze.

If your sound is off and you don't have any apps running then there must be some other device in your car.

Did you buy it second hand?

Sounds like Waze to me too, another Waze user must have reported some potholes in your area recently, that's why you will get new pothole warnings. Don't know why someone would report a vehicle at side of road ahead, anyway its probably driven off ;D Perhaps some idiot enabled the "vehicle at side of road ahead Warning" for a lark >:(
If you haven't got Waze then that's weird, perhaps the car is haunted ???

Are you absolutely sure Hyacinth Bucket isn’t in the passenger seat?  :P

The 'car ion hard shoulder' messages are always followed by... a car on hard shoulder!

...Try going for a drive with infotainment system switched off along with any phones.
If you go down the same route(s), see what happens.

My Honda is a mk3 (with no built in sat Nav) so I use Waze.
The warnings you report are typical of Waze via Android Smartphone.
In the MK3 speed warnings can be set at any speed in either mph and km/h. These supplement the warnings issued when the vehicle camera detects roadside speed limit signs .
70 km/h is approx 43 mph. A factor of 5/8 which might explain warnings at strange (British) speeds?
Pehaps a mobile phone slipped out of a mechanic's / passenger's pocket/handbag recently?
Consider exorcism! :)
