What's even more puzzling is classic cars are legally allowed to use LED bulbs.

Surely the only criteria should be the ability to pass the beam pattern test, presumably that would root out the dodgy bulbs.

Lots of exemptions for classic cars. A car built before 1931 doesnt legally need to have ANY headlights . (or indicators or brake lights for some years after that)

I like the white light of Leds  . Not so keen on the blue tint to HID/Xenon  .

Just joined the forum with a 2012 EXL CVT
In mint condition and drives v well
But headlights seem really dim!
I asked Honda dealer for advice and they said - 'yup they are awful- I'd advise you to go to an auto electrician!'
Had a look on this site and found some older threads
What do people think
- what is current best legal bulb for headlights and foglights?
Thanks

I use an earlier version of these

Road legal and a great increase in brightness and range.

I've used both Philips and Osram uprated type H4 lamps (X-treme, Nightbreaker Laser etc +150% or +200% now) with pretty decent results. They tend not to last as long as the older glow-worms, but not bad.
I tried some of the Twenty-20 types from https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/h4-60-55w-headlight-bulb/ and so far they've been very good, little to choose between them and the big name ones. I believe they are made by a company who bought an old GE factory. Fairly whitish light and even spread.

Easy but fiddly. You can not see what you are doing as there is not much space between the back of the bulb and the bulkhead.

The good thing is that you access everything from the engine bay.

You've caught a great spec MK2 , as well as hlamp upgrade, don't forget to check the cabin filter in yours it's behind the passenger glove box. 2 min task I replace most filters with blue print they have great parts finder on line around £10 or less for a real improvement for the new Jazz. Happy motoring.

Ive been a big advocate of PIAA bulbs for years, I currently have a set of 80w/80w competition white bulbs in my accord. I was curious to try the classic car led set however so installed some about 3 months ago. My thoughts on these are mixed:

Installation was simple and quality seems very good. They are very very bright, and very white/ blue. This is to be expected as they quote 6000k as the colour temperature. My PIAAs are also quoted as 6000k but the CC leds are far more blue. In driving terms the PIAAs give everything a nice natural colour, road, signs, roadside greenery etc. The CC Leds however warp this in some unexpected ways. They pick out cats eyes for absolutely miles, even when dipped. If there is a cats eye on the horizon you will likely see it. By contrast they barely pick out anything green. Verges and hedges are only half as visible as with normal bulbs. This leads to a very 'Tron' like experience, where one is driving through a high contrast black and white (blue) tunnel, as opposed to down a lane.
There is also more glare from the CC Leds towards oncoming traffic even when dipped. I get flashed a lot when dipped, with the cut off at a sensible low point. The PIAAs do not attract this.
The cut is very clean saying that, but even so the overspill above must be significant (hard to measure).

So Im in a quandry: get another set of PIAA bulbs, which I prefer, but only have about 1 year in them at £130 a pair; stick with the CC leds, or do I pay even more and try a set of PIAA Hyper Arros LEDs? I think the PIAA leds might be similar to the CC leds, so Im probably going to get standard PIAA H4 bulbs. Shame as the CC leds on paper seem to be the best all rounder currently available.

The Skoda I am in the process of buying had an "Advisory" last year for LED bulbs fitted to headlights and front sidelights. It will be interesting to see what happens at this MOT, before I take delivery.
