Mk3 made in Japan?
« on: December 08, 2022, 01:47:36 PM »
Hi all,

I have seen a Jazz 1.3 SE 2019 that said 'made in Japan' on the data/vin plate.

Are all the Mk3 Jazz 1.3 made in Japan or are some made elsewhere?? If so is it dependant on age or model etc.

Ideally I would prefer a car made in Japan as the quality is better, I know some will disagree!

Thanks

all now made in japan for the uk market, check the vin on the windscreen and if it starts with J its a japan car

also if it is a 2019 check the space under the boot as they cut the space down on the last cars so it wont hold a full size tyre (if you wanted to install one) and has a cage on the underside of the car to take the space up

First Honda plans were to import Mk3 Jazz from Mexico Celaya plant (as HR-V) but high request from USDM and some troubles in Celaya pushed Honda to import EUDM Jazz from Yorii  or Suzuka, Japan (X or S on the 11th character of your vin number).

To my knowledge, all MK3 Japanese-made cars from 2015 to 2020 was 1500cc.

To my knowledge, all MK3 Japanese-made cars from 2015 to 2020 was 1500cc.

All UK S, SE, & EX models made in that period were made in Japan with 1300 engines. The only model with 1500cc was the Sport, for a brief period from 2018 onwards. May have been different in other markets.

It's the same for all Europe. All made in Japan, no matter the engine.

Yep.
My one comes from Yorii, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Yorii,+Distretto+di+%C5%8Csato,+Prefettura+di+Saitama,+Giappone/@36.0928434,139.2240937,2527m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x601edaa7a98dc1b5:0xf5e56e82716332f7!8m2!3d36.1184155!4d139.1929538

The engine was built in Ogawa, close to Yorii plant.

Can you decode mine?
That is not the VIN.  The top line says "Honda Motor Co., Ltd."  The second line says "type" and the third "chassis number"

It is not a VIN because cars made for the Japanese market do not have a VIN. The system is different like just about everything else here - but don't get me started. 100V mains grrrr.

Anyway, cars have a unique chassis number under which information is stored in a central database. There are plenty of companies who will produce a report for you for a fee. It includes information on date of manufacture, model, variant, colour, crash damage, MOT reports including kilometreage and more but I don't know whether city of manufacture is included. I don't think so from what I have seen.

Honda will no doubt have a database that contains that information and more but it is not available to the public as far as I know. I have a contact at Honda so I might be able to find out. We will see.

Really?
So no VIN at the bottom of the windshield?

Yep, and very typical of how things were/have been here for a long time. There is no VIN on the windscreen or anywhere else. The chassis number and other codes does the same job but in a walled garden. Even the colour codes are different and opaque. Someone once memorably described the entire economic/regulatory system here as protectionism on steroids. It is deliberate because it makes it difficult for outsiders to sell in the Japanese market and also more difficult for non approved traders to buy in the Japanese market and export to other markets.

I got a reply from my contact at Honda. He is seeing what manufacturing information he can get hold of. Even though he is pretty senior he is not in a department that routinely needs this information so he will have to ask a favour to get it. Another problem is that more generally, information is regarded as valuable and is almost always confidential and heavily protected.

And I have a reply from my contact at Honda. Mine came from exactly the same lines even though Suzuka is just up the road from me.
