Hi, I took my Jazz to my local garage for MOT. ABS light has been on for a while and I'm told there is an issue with ABS unit.
He said they could send it away to be fixed (takes a week and might be 200) or I could maybe find a second hand one from a Breakers.
Would a second hand one need to recoded to the car for a 2007 Jazz? - He said that might be more cost and difficulty if that's the case.

Is there anything specific I need to ask for in terms of trying to find the right second hand one - would it need to be from a Mk1 (2002 - 2008) Jazz?
Is there a good place to look to find a second hand one - ebay etc?

I'm not knowledgable mecahnically - any help and advice I'd be grateful for.

Hello,

The jazz i have has a lot of paperwork for the repair carried out along the years and on one of the invoices there is also mentioned abs repair, with a cost similar to what you mentioned). It looks like it didn't last more than a year because on the following invoice, a year later, there is a cost for a new abs pump, so in this case repair didn't last long, but i know of others who did and had no issues with it.
i've seen people recommending this company (https://www.ecutesting.com/product-catalogue/honda/jazz/abs-pump-ecumodule-combined/amc001136/ ) but i haven't used them as i didn't need to.

I can't edit the post anymore.

Are you absolutely sure is the abs pump at fault? did this show on diagnosis tool?

I dont know if it will need reprogramming.  Quite possibly.

But as for a second hand unit or getting your own one refurbished, I'd go for refurbishing. Either of your own unit  (which might then be plug and play' ) or on an exchange unit basis.

A secondhand one may be older than the existing one, and at best would be 'working when removed'  Who knows how long before that too has problems.  All those labour costs and it may not last long.

Having your own repaired may cost a bit more, and a pita if the car is off the road for a week.
But hopefully  it will go to a specialist who knows what they are doing.  The better ones would replace all seals, gaskets and certain moving parts whether they need it or not.  And if something is beyond repair  may have suitable used parts to cannibalize into one good un  .     Others might just replace  'the part that always goes'  , which to be fair might be all thats needed.   And I wouldnt mind betting some of the units they receive for renovation are not faulty at all. ;)

Refurbishers  rely on a good reputation within the trade and may offer a guarantee on the part.
A used one may just come from a breakers yard, who have the labour of removing the unit from the donor car , and whos reputation may be general, and limited to replacing units that proved to be faulty.  You might still face the extra labour costs.

If you win the rat race you are still a rat. These days I would rather eat cheese and wait for them with baited breath.
(inspired by W.C. Fields.   -For me any field  is now a potential WC Field.
