Faint metallic rattle sound from front
« on: January 19, 2019, 12:48:10 PM »
Hi All

Just wanted to share an observation, I recently bought an used approved Dec 2011, ES CVT Jazz

When radio and fan is off, I hear a faint metallic rattling noise from the front. It’s more obvious on uphill. Only there when accelerating.

Not there on N or P mode.

Has anyone observed this before, it may be normal though ?

Thanks

It's pinking ( pre ignition )  - try a tank of high octane and it will disappear. Happens most at lower revs with engine under load, changing down a gear and letting engine rev more instead of ' slogging ' will help..

Hasn't it still got the normal 1,2 D R and P

Has Jazz CVT got flappy paddles to give 7 virtual gears ?

At low throttle openings CVT will normally choose highest 'gear' it can ( lowest engine revs), and will 'change down' when throttle is opened further.

Thanks

It has P R N D S

Yes it has flaps for manual overriding of gears.

I observed the noise on 20mph to 50mph( haven’t driven above it yet  after I started observing this) No matter how much I drive, it’s there, 5 miles, 10 Miles.

Will try high octane petrol and low gears pedals to see the change..

Could also be piston slap I suppose.

Piston slap is more of a knock / tapping and would be there at tickover, also normally disappears as engine warms up.

I f you have concerns just let the supplying dealership know in writing, use signed for postage as proof & then give then an opportunity to put it right to your satisfaction, Buying from a dealership you have 30 days -  6 months in which to raise your issue.

Thanks All

I have emailed the dealer and they replied that I should show it to my nearest dealer.

I have booked an appointment for same.

I will update the diagnosis and solution if they provide some fix.

Thanks Again!

I had a visit to Honda Services today, They found the CVT oil is low.

They did not guarantee that noise would be ok after CVT oil refill.

Scared !!

I have got the Oil changed today, Car do feel slightly different.

But no change in the rattling/chirping sound. Th technician says , its there in all Jazz. I am not convinced though.

Do we have anyone here near KT22 , so that I can try to observe in other cars ?

As per technician as the engine is quite near to the driver , So it can be heard.

Thanks!

As your Jazz was purchased from Honda dealer as part of the approved scheme, suggest you put your concerns in writing - not an email- send it recorded delivery to the service manager.
I n the letter state you have issues & concerns [ insert date & mileage you first noticed the noise] asking for the noise to be diagnosed ,
Also ask to drive other used Jazz of similar spec age as yours for you to test drive.
Keep the forum updated, good luck.

My new to me Jazz makes a difficult to describe noise that is probably the same thing as this. (You posted on my post.)
I worried about it and took to to Honda to listen to.
They thought it was a 'normal' noise, but I still worried.
The very helpful service guys called me when they had another of the same model in for servicing. They took that one for a drive and concluded that it made exactly the same noise as mine.
It would be interesting to know if any other cvt owners hear the same thing coming from their cars.
I don't know if it helps, but my somewhat older father absolutely cannot hear this sound - maybe it is in a range that his ears can no longer hear.
I'm not sure I'd describe it as a rattle. I think it is metallic, but maybe more of a whirr?
