You do have to kick it out of Atkinson mode when you want to move, at last the original version. The facelifted version might have better programming in this respect - the courtesy car I drove earlier this year seemed better.

It's the downside of an automatic - the car can choose what ratio it wants and unless you signal your intentions the older Mk3 prefers to keep the rpm low.

I have read several threads about the Atkinson engine being sluggish, I have the CVT version and have not found this to be the case as I think the revs are higher in normal driving than the manual maybe, I do find that I have to make the engine work harder compared with my mk2, I have not actually driven a manual but would value other peoples thoughts on this. Thanks.

Honda HR-V 2015- / CVT vs MT

Over the last two days I have been test driving the HR-V.  The first one was a 1.5 Petrol SE Navi CVT and the second a 1.6 Diesel EX MT (they didn’t have a petrol one available).

Difficult to compare mpg but my feelings were that like for like the CVT would be better than the MT.

Without pushing either one hard, the MT seems more punchy than the CVT.  The CVT gave me the impression that it wasn’t accelerating that well but if you watch the speedo it actually was.  It’s all to do with perception.  Driving the CVT harder, especially in S mode, it really performs very well.  Use of the paddles gives it more of a driver controlled drive but to be honest if I was intending to drive like that I may as well get an MT model.

I took the CVT down a steep hill (Spread Eagle just south of Shaftesbury for anyone who knows the area) and used the paddles for engine braking.  That worked really well.  Going back up the hill I got stuck behind lorries but it was an effortless climb.  My jazz would have been down to 1st gear and revving considerably.

The headlights are brilliant on the EX and the automating dipping functions better than my Jazz.  It dips when doing less than 6mph so when you join a road at a junction it is already dipped and doesn’t come back to full beam until you reach 25mph (not that you need full beam with those LED low beam headlights).

The Intelligent Speed Limiter is improved over my Jazz in so much that it reads signs that mine doesn’t (e.g. those partially obscured by tree growth).

One thing that the MT handles better that the CVT is the Auto Idle Stop.  If you make use of the Automatic Brake Hold on the CVT, the Auto Idle Stop never cuts in.

The downside of the Automatic Brake Hold, and only downside as far as I can see, is that the brake lights stay on (one of my pet hates as at night it dazzles the driver behind).  The salesman said “but you’re not in the car behind”. Typical sales type comment I thought.

My wife disliked the SE purely due to the lack of passenger side seat height adjustment.  She said that she felt like a child being allowed to sit in the front as a treat.  She also said that she felt that I was looking down on her the whole time, but said that she was generally used to that!

Overall I will likely go for a 1.5 Petrol EX CVT but will wait now until the facelift in October.  To be honest I would probably stick to the Jazz if they put a 1.5 in the EX but there are no plans to do that as far as I can see.

Thanks for the response. I definitely need to find a new Honda dealer... maybe I'll try Rotherham  :D

Any thoughts on what mileage these starter clutches fail at or if a problem with the clutch can be diagnosed for certain?

The one in the first link seemed to be common to a load of Honda's. Unfortunately the listing only goes up to 2012 models, but the Mk2 was 2007 to 2014. Doubt they would change the throttle pedal but who knows. At £14.95 it seemed worth a try.

I have a Japan made 2006 and I had my gearbox bearings replaced. Cost me £324, all inclusive, by a gearbox specialist, and I am glad I had it done. Bearing didn't start to rumble until 90K. First price I got, from a local garage with an ex-Honda mechanic on the staff, was £1100.
Basically, what I am saying, is, if it was me I would be swayed towards the one that has been done, all else equal.

Hi guys,

I'm picking between a few different used MK1s, 2007/2008. All 1.4 SE and 50-70k miles. On the back of my previous experience and this excellent forum I've made a point of finding out from the servicing dealerships whether the gearbox bearings have been replaced. There doesn't seem to be much other expensive stuff to go wrong, but if I got one that had been subject to the bearings warranty extension without having the work done (and is now unable to have the work done as it's too late) I'd find that a worry, I think.

Two of them (47k and 67k miles) are China-built VINs, one with full Honda FSH and one with part-Honda FSH. Those appear not to have had the gearbox work done, as it doesn't appear on their histories with the dealerships.

The other is a Japan built (1 year older) VIN and I have confirmed with the servicing Honda dealership it had the gearbox bearings replaced in 2014 with part of the cost paid by Honda as goodwill. Also a few hundred quid cheaper.

So:
- Am I right in thinking the third option is best, all else being equal? Seems to give me peace of mind re the gearbox having been done already, and I'd rather not rely on the sketchy 3rd party warranties to cover it.
- Anything else I should be on the lookout for in terms of repair history?

The part as fitted is the discontinued item at the top of the parts page of your first reply, and the current part number I have been given by Honda is 17800 TFO-JO4 (not JO3).
In reply to your second posting I think the part I require has to be specifically for the Mark 2 2013 CVT automatic model and I've found a couple of listing on Ebay that fit the bill, but the part numbers visible on both listings photos don't match the numbers on my pedal.
eBay item number:122769813293 - seems correct but says it comes from a 2016 car (mark 3?)
eBay item number:332285410422 - seems correct in most details but for the year (2011) and photo part numbers

At the end of a driving lesson, my pupil goes to get out of the car, from the passenger door. She obviously uses the door handle but doesn't fully open the door, when she releases the door handle she then can't re-open the door, she tries locking and unlocking the door, but to no avail. The solution (on this occasion) is to open the door from the outside. When the door is then closed it all works fine again.
I thought I would just post this in case someone else gets the same situation and searches for the solution.
