Title: 2016 Jazz cranking but not starting
Post by: Mk88 on October 10, 2023, 08:05:54 AM
Hi everyone,
Looking for your help with the diagnosis:
2016 Honda jazz, 1.3 cranking but not starting with neither of the keys.
Attaching a video to show the symptoms.

There no damage or driving over the rough roads. Lost thing I did with was re-park it so it was a very short run of maybe 30 seconds.
After cranking it for about 15 seconds, there is very light smell of petrol inside the car.

Fuel pump? Fuel filter or fuel lines?

If you do a very short engine run, eg to re-park the car, then you are likely to have flooded it and it won't start normally next time. There is a "clear flood mode" which basically involves flooring the throttle whilst cranking it. There'll be a lot of coughing and spluttering, but it will fire eventually and run OK. Been there, done that ...

Thanks so much for the help, back and running again!
I am surprised that I was unable to find the answer by googling Honda jazz cranks but will not start and similar phrases.

I would also check the battery V reading then charge prior to what we used to call winter arrives

I always recommend running an engine for at least 30sec, preferably longer, and also don't "blip" the throttle but hold the revs steady at around 2k rpm.
There are various reasons for this.  There is a cranking fuelling mode which can be somewhat rich depending on temperature of the engine.  There will then be an afterstart fuelling phase while any enrichment ramps off  . The system will reach feedback conditions by maybe 45sec or so. Ideally you want to get through all this before shutting down.
Blipping the throttle adds accel enrichment and makes plug fouling much more likely when cold.
Some systems can be adaptive and "learns" stable values but it can take a short time for this to establish,  either time or cycles. If you start and run an engine for a very short time,  especially when just part warm, it can abort the adaptive stage and it can default to something which isn't appropriate especially for a subsequent cold start.
I've had this with my old Yaris if I moved it on the drive when part warm and it then didn't want to start the next morning.
Start foot off the throttle, allow to idle for at least 15sec, drive off gently or ease the revs up to 2k rpm and hold steady. Allow the engine to run for at least a minute if you can before stopping it if you're only running it briefly.
As said by others,  holding the throttle wide open during cranking "usually " inhabits fuelling and allows you to clear wetted plugs.

When I got into my Jazz the first time this week and put the key in the ignition and turned and it wouldn't start, I had to run after the guy who delivered the car and ask him what was wrong. He said that you need to put your foot on the clutch to start the car. First time I'd ever heard of that.  :D

Also other japanese cars (ie Yaris, until it had a clutch) need to deeply press the clutch pedal to crank the engine.

I was taught that it's good practice to floor the clutch when starting, irrespective of whether the car requires it, so I've always done it. It guards against the previous driver having left it in gear, and reduces the load on the starter as the engine is cranked.

Had 2 BMWs and a Mazda that needed this too
