Mk 4 software updates issue
« on: April 02, 2021, 09:23:26 AM »
As a new owner I'm trying everything out on my Crosstar, so I thought I'd check for software updates (as I'm not sure the subwoofer in the boot is working). I duly connected to our WiFi but the system spat out an error when trying to connect for the update check. Having discovered it can also be done by USB I thought I'd try that in case it didn't like our WiFi. I duly downloaded the software versions onto the USB from the car and went onto the site usb.honda.com to read the file and check for updates. When I try and upload the file I get "connection failure" "Error accessing server" so it seems the problem is Honda's server rather than anything at my end. Has anyone managed to do this successfully recently?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen any kind of connectivity work in any car. I wouldn’t worry about it

I would not mess with a software update on a brand new car under warranty anyway. It's not your regular computer.

If the subwoofer volume level parameter in the infotainment system has no effect, I'd contact the Honda car dealer first.

My Civic has a factory fit subwoofer in the boot and I've never heard it from the drivers seat. It does work because I used some tubing as a stethoscope early on.

It probably isn't noticeable unless your in wake the neighbours mode.
Let's be careful out there !

Can you increase the subwoofer volume in the sound menu?

A subwoofer is not directional. I was into hi-fi, and at one show it was JR speakers on demo and the salesman asked where the bass was coming from. Everyone pointed to the front but he said no and pointed to the coffee table in the corner. That was the subwoofer.

Yes there is a parameter for that in the crosstar.

One can also use test tones:

Everything under 80Hz should be subwoofer territory, albeit non directional.

I had the subwoofer volume set to max but nothing was coming out when I checked in the boot. It turned out to be my sound source, I was streaming from my phone using Bluetooth. Once I changed to Radio 1 on Dab and turned up the volume there was some output, doesn't make much difference at lower volume though

I noticed that the infotainment level (i.e. gain) was not so high when streaming from my old phone using Bluetooth, compared to direct mp3 playback from the USB slot.

Had I've bought a Crosstar instead of the EX, I'd have tried to download some full range test tones to an USB flash drive and see how it goes with the sub at decent level.
Expecting windows rattling, that sort of thing. :D

If memory serves me right, BBC Radio 1 is their dance/pop channel. Should have plenty of bass.

Has anyone got this to work at all? Desperately trying to update my car's infotainment and getting the same message - all Honda customer support told me to do was to go to a dealer...

There is a hidden diagnose mode on this car. You can check you speakers, cameras, GPS etc... are  working correctly.
Cheers!

So why not go to a dealer?

The legal position is that your contract is with the dealer who sold you the car, if there’s something wrong with it they must fix or replace it. You do not have a direct legal relationship with Honda UK, so their customer support response directing you to the dealer was correct. It is up to the dealer to manage the relationship with Honda, you just have to fight your corner with the dealer and insist that they do their job. Your ultimate sanction, if you feel that strongly about the issue, is to (threaten to) reject the car: I did that with an infotainment fault on my Mk3 when it was new, and it certainly got their attention.

I see lots of posts across various car forums where there appears to be a tricky fault.

The owners always seem to want a cheapo DIY fix, which is sometimes appropriate but some reported faults really do need a franchised dealer who have the tools and knowledge, and, access to Honda.
Let's be careful out there !

I have a new (1 month) Crosstar. I had more expectations from the infotainment, but I can confirm that the subwoofer works as expected. The cut-off frequency is quite low (I like that) and this could make it difficult at first to hear the effect. I suggest to do some tests with lossless music, in a quiet place and double check the streaming settings. Many providers compress audio files and Bluetooth does not help, still the subwoofer presence should be evident.
I did not do any update so far as the car is new and I have been struggling with the Honda app. It finally works, maybe it could be much easier and I still need to go through four levels of authorisation/consent each time I want to use it.
I tried a few times to connect to Wi-Fi and hotspot but the car refused to proceed with the software update or to access the Honda app Centre.
