Engine undertray problem
« on: March 04, 2018, 04:06:29 PM »
Whenever I take off the plastic engine undertray, I seem to be able to lose a screw or clip - not clever, I know.   To future-proof myself, I went into a Honda main dealer last week thinking I'd buy a few spares, to be met with a pricing surprise.

As per the photo, 6 screw & washer units, 6 U Nuts and 2 push in fixings came to....£143.   Needless to say, I didn't make the purchase.

I can obtain the correct size screws and washers, but am having difficulty in locating the correct size and shape of U Nut.   Does anyone have a designation for the correct ones please?

Don't have the sizes for correct one,  you will have to wait until i do next oil change,  but plenty here...

here is a size chart with dimensions

http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemDescV4&item=252394531430&category=42905&pm=1&ds=0&t=1510420898000&ver=0

why they give imperial screw size numbers and metric clip dimensions is a bit odd.

and some info on imperial to metric self-tapping screw diameters

https://www.simetric.co.uk/siselftap.htm

and get one of these magnetic trays

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

£143 is fantastic,  I guess the parts counter assistant just smiled. The captive screw clips are quite generic and you should be able to buy a bag on eBay / AliExpress fairly easily, same with the plastic pop things, just need to measure the hole size. The Mazda / Ford style are slightly more convenient as the centre is a plastic screw so easier to remove.

You have reminded me that I'm missing 2 clips like the last item pictured holding the front valance thanks to my bump-parking ex-neighbour.

Might be worth checking the price with another Honda dealer?

Pop along to your local breakers yard & ask nicely

Whenever I tackle a job, I look up Lings and subsequently Honda Parts UK and download the parts diagram. This helps with identifying what needs doing.
I have just looked at Lings for screws that hold the front spoiler as I haven't got the undertray parts list BUT 9 x screws at £3.22 each. So that's nearly £30 plus vat?.
I buy off good old Ebay as suggested. A bag of spire nuts I think was about £4.

£143! I'm surprised he told you that with a straight face. I'm a bit anti main-dealers to be honest. In my experience, once you find a good friendly garage, you'll never look back. Finding them is not easy, though.

Try vehicle clips website. They charge just 3 pounds for a packet of ten clip.

I use a plastic yoghurt pot - one per side - when dismantling - to put fixings in.Saves heartache and spending  money (both are the same for a Scot) :-*
