What's the membership experience with Jazz CVT gearboxes? Any high mileage problems?

I sold my Mk1 (CVT-Sport) to a friend. We've drifted apart now but when I spoke to him last February he said the car had done 90k miles and he thought the clutch might be starting to go. He said it was still moving around okay but made an odd whining noise sometimes when moving off from stationary.

Forum member Ozzie is approaching 200k miles in his Mk 2 hybrid Jazz. I recall that the A/C recently had a problem but he's not said anything about the CVT. The older CVT Jazzes can have a clutch judder problem which was caused by the recommended CVT oil change frequency being too long (4 years / 50k miles). Since 2011 Honda has reduced the CVT oil change to 2 years / 25k miles. There is also a documented procedure for clearing the clutch judder.

My Mk 2 CVT developed a whine at 60,000 miles. Honda investigated and found the main bearings failing.

The quote for repair was £5,625, but they 'generously' offered to do it for 'only' £4,200.

I rejected this and ended up buying a new Mk3, after they allowed £3,500 trade-in on the failed car (only £500 less than they had offered previously, before the failure was known).

The car had a full Honda service history.

Hiya,

As John Ratsey mentioned my Jazz Hybrid is now at 198,000 miles on a 61 reg (September 2011) with no gearbox issues. The CVT fluid has been changed every 25,000 miles by a Honda main dealer (7 changes so far).

The air conditioning compressor clutch has become badly worn and works fine whilst the air temperature is not too hot, but if its a very hot day it gives out, so at the moment I don't think it justifies a £600 repair bill for the few days when the outside temperature is over 25 degrees.

Automatic gearboxes are generally expensive to fix.  An automatic gearbox specialist told me that CVT boxes are very expensive to fix.  If something goes wrong it may be a lot cheaper to get a salvaged CVT box fitted if one can be found.

Very true. As I said in that thread I did find cheaper options than the Honda price, but they were still going to cost more than the £500 I lost because of the problem......but that did involve buying a new Jazz. So effectively I spent money to save money.

The Honda quote to fix wasn't to repair existing, it was replacing the main assembly as a unit. This is less than the whole CVT. Honda UK have never had to supply this part in the UK so I was very unlucky.

Thanks for the replies - seems likely that we'll get plenty of trouble-free CVT motoring.

We only do about 8K carefully driven miles per year and always stick to the service schedule, so hopefully all will be well for many years to come...
