2009 US Honda Fit Makes Debut
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:06:35 PM »
Pictures have appeared of the new Honda Fit (Jazz) for the United States, due to go on sale for 2009. Regrettably, something yet again has been lost in translation with the 'federalized' US version. Thanks to stricter US crash regulations, the Jazz has been blighted with extra inches to the area forward of the front wheels. This same problem effected the current Jazz when it was re-engineered for North America in 2006. At least that was passable, giving that the Jazz was already five years old and was not conceived for North America at design time.

The USA introduced stricter impact regulations in the 1970's, which infamously prompted Porsche to produce the 'impact bumper' version of the 911. Even today, the pre-'73 chrome-bumper 911's are more sought-after than the later black-bumper cars. It was also thanks to these regulations that British Leyland ruined the MGB with the addition of the 'rubber bumpers'.

The US Jazz made an appearance at the New York Auto Show eariler this month. When the 2009 model goes on sale in the autumn (or 'fall' to Americans), it will offer the 1.5-litre engine with either manual or (for the first time) a 5-speed automatic tranmission with paddle-shifts.
