Hi and space savers
« on: June 27, 2023, 03:55:14 PM »
Hi everyone,

My first post.

I have joined on behalf of my daughter-in-law who is taking delivery of a 2011 Jazz Ex CVT later this week. Her first Honda and bought on my recommendation as I have been very pleased with my first Honda (a 2013 Civic) bought 3 years ago. I have belonged to several car forums over the years and know what a great source of information and help they are. So, thanks in advance for any queries we raise.

First task will be to purchase a space saver spare wheel as I have no faith in magic repair gunk. The car has 16 inch wheels and there seem to be choices of either 15 or 16 inch space savers with varying tyre sizes advertised. Any advice on what to go for would be appreciated.

Cheers,
LeeP

Although either size (15 or 16 inch) will fit I would go for the 16 inch to provide better stability if you had to drive any distance (such as several miles to the next motorway junction and then onwards to find a tyre place that was open).

I have had very few punctures over the years but as the Law of Sod says, you will have a puncture on a Sunday evening and it will be when it is pouring with rain and the tyre will be damaged beyond a simple plug repair!

Why not simply get a full sized spare wheel, 16" steel or alloy wheel fits straight into the wheel well, you just need the holding bolt to prevent movement. Best to look around your local breakers yard for both items or if you can find one online locally that's your choice. Space savers are an emergency only fitment a real pain if being used . Plenty of examples of forum members posting their examples. As soon as I bought our new 2011 EX I bought a full sized spare. Only used once since when a large washer went through the rear tyre some year back.

Hi all,

Just to confirm (as previously stated) that a full size 16 inch spare wheel fits easily into the spare wheel well. Fit the wheel "upside down" and the screwed retainer (bought with the wheel) holds it firmly down. We didn't need to provide any support above the wheel as the existing hinged section of the boot floor spans easily across. There is also room to store things within the concave section of the wheel itself.

I didn't realise but there was an exiting jack, together with a bag containing wheel brace, tow hitch and jack handle packed in with the jack at the rear (bumper end) of the boot. Presumably all original Honda. So, check yours before buying a complete spare wheel kit with all the tools.

Cheeers,
LeeP

Hi LeeP123 and welcome on board. :D

I bought a full size spare for my mk2, 15" steel of ebay for £50, and it has proven to a worthwhile investment. Only used once, but got me out of trouble on holiday.

You've done right by your family in recommending a Jazz. Superb little cars. Mine has been faultless over the last 3yrs and 40+k.

Research this forum on CVT, I believe the oil needs changing periodically.

Manual here if it helps. http://hondafitjazz.com/manual3/index.html

Many thanks but one came with the wheel. I'm sure someone else will want as important to restrain wheel in the event of an accident.

Cheers,

I have a Cronos wheel - 16" 4X100PCD 53offset 56mm bore with 185/55 Dunlop sport tyre 5.6mm thread depth which no need for now, have not found shipping which does not require difficuly packaging so stuck with it unless it can be picked up in Perthshire.

If you are passing by this way let me know and you can have it.

Just a minor area to check on - behind the lower passenger glove box is the cabin filter fitting which is worth checking the condition - often missed during services. The unit is accessed by pressing the open glove box sides together then the letter box sized unit is unclipped and the filter replaced. I have used Blue Print cabin filter on many customers Jazz . A 4 minute task which results in a much improved driving experience. Plenty of alternatives to the Honda part.

As you say, the cabin filter can be missed in regular servicing.  Some years ago I bought a one owner from new SAAB that came with full service history.  When I came to service it I found the cabin filter was the original.  It was so full of dust that it appeared to be flat (not concertina profile) due to the build up of dirt. I think the mileage was around 60,000 miles.  Have a photograph of it somewhere.

A free wheel ! What more could you want.  8)

FWIW the spare I bought via Ebay was listed by a private seller. He wrapped it in strong bin bags and bound them with lots of tape. I can't recall the courier he used, but they were happy to deliver it. You could also try a gumtree advert for free if you want shot of it.

I had exactly the same with a Focus estate I bought a few years ago. The seller left the service receipts in the history. The main dealer receipt showed they had charged their customer for the filter, but it had never been changed! They're called main stealers for a reason.

Mind, given what a faff it is to change a Focus mk2 pollen filter, I can understand how a time pressed and stressed Ford technician said it had been done when it hadn't.

The main small parcel courier companies may be fussy about packing and labelling  but i've had used wheel/tyre  delivered  quite simply wrapped in heavy duty cling film. with a delivery label.   And i've had new tyres delivered that were not even wrapped or labelled.     They were delivered by Tuffnells  (a courier who specialise in larger items although I think they may have recently gone bust)
The lorry had quite a few unlabelled tyres on board (plus  conventional packages.)  . The driver just referred to a list, selected my four tyres from the pile , and agreed  with me they were correct.  Job done.
