HONDA TYRE SEALANT
« on: March 04, 2010, 01:47:04 AM »
I was just wondering if any Forum Members have had the misfortune to use the Honda supplied puncture sealant that they supply with a new Jazz? I purchased a space saver wheel and tyre when I bought my EX last July and am trying to figure out whether it was a waste of money or not.  :-\
My other car is a 2015 Range Rover Sport....
No, seriously, it is!!!

The bottle of goop is no use if you have had a blowout.

What you say is very true Nowster, but in over 30 years of motoring, I have had several punctures, but never a blow-out. This doesn't mean it's not going to happen, but must reduce the risk.

In addition, isn't this at least part of the reason they give you free AA membership? So you can get to a garage to get it fixed?

Just interested in people's experience with the "gunk".

No Jockanese I don't think it was a waste of money when I had to have a new tyre last year the chap at kwik fit told me it's a specialised job to clean the c!!!!!! out of the tyre.

Yes and quite a few tyre suppiers don't want to know due to the clean up needed after dealing with the tyre.Unless of course Honda have solved the clean up problem.

Most tyre dealers will advise you to buy a new tyre after using any gunk or foam in the tyre.  They should be looked at as an emergency measure to get you home (just like a spacesaver tyre really, except that you are limited to 50mph with a spacesaver).

If you want to hedge your bets I would have a spacesaver and the gunk, and if the punctured tyre was going to need replacing soon anyway use the gunk, otherwise use the spacesaver and get the tyre repaired asap.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

The gunk is standard fit, along with a cigarette-lighter socket powered inflation pump.

Buy a 14" steel wheel (I got a brand new one for £5 of ebay) and fit a 175/70/14 tyre.  Note you will need different (steel wheel) wheel nuts for the spare, as the nuts for alloy wheels have different taper.

Can anyone please tell me if a temporary spare wheel for my Jazz 1.4EX purchased from Honda comes with tools for jacking it up?
When I bought it last year the salesman didn't explain that without this option it only comes with a compressor and a can of sealant.
Many thanks

Hmmm. When I bought my 1.4GE last year I asked for a spacesaver to be included. They also added the jack etc. It wouldn't have been much use without it. They didn't bat an eyelid when I asked for it - looked as though they expected it!
I wondered if they were supplied to Honda as a kit? Maybe you'll strike it lucky!

When I got mine last year I had a space saver included as part of the deal & there was also a jack - but I was under the impression that you got the jack anyway. After all you may want to jack the car up for other reasons apart from fitting a spare wheel

I have just read mexmeister's post above re. the need for different wheel nuts. My car also came with a pack of four (spare?) wheel nuts and the key for the locking nut. I did not know what these were for and neither did the salesman when I picked the car up. Could these be for use with the steel spare?

Hi
My ES built in Japan was supplied without a space saver but was supplied with a jack. I understand that you need to jack up the car before putting in the sealant so that the wheel can be rotated to distribute the sealant evenly. The 4 non locking wheel nuts delivered with the car, I believe are the factory fit wheel nuts for the alloys, the locking nuts being fitted by the dealers before delivery.

The jack is is stored in the very back of the lower boot section behind a flap in the boot lining.

The 'spare' nuts you refer to are the ones the dealer removes and replaces with locking wheel nuts.

Its a dealer fitment on UK models.

I asked my dealer today about the point raised above re. the need for separate wheel nuts for use with a steel spare wheel. He said that it was quite OK to replace an alloy wheel with a Honda space saver spare and use the original wheel nuts. There seems to be conflicting opinions on this. Has anyone else any thoughts please?
