Title: Spare Wheel / Under Boot Storage Finishing..
Post by: JazzyJJ on June 18, 2018, 03:17:39 PM
Is everyone else's mk3 boot finished like this? Not great, why is that?

I was just taking a look and considering a spare wheel (in future).

Pic of full area as well for anyone interested.

Anyone got a pic of the same area with a spare wheel installed? Curious how much space is around it and on top for storage.

If you have a Honda spare wheel kit there is a small amount of storage around the wheel but none on top as the tool and Jack storage / floor support fits closely to the wheel. There is some shallow storage on top of the floor support, about one and a half inches deep. I keep my user manual, a torch and a few other odds and ends there.

I purchased a spare wheel on Ebay so not the full kit as Honda supplied but I have the Jack, foot pump and odds and sods inc Tools  stored etc.
I found that if you put wheel off centre and used the bolt and cup etc in a wheel nut hole to safely secure it.
It provided more space to accomodate the above accoutrements.at the side by placing Tyre pump in box into centre of wheel,it provided substantial support for the cardboard floor that is supplied.
Hope this is of interest and perhaps some help.
You need to move wheel around abit to maximise the available space.
Good luck.

Full size wheel in the attached picture. Scissor jack wrapped in cardboard on the left. Biggest problem is finding suitable support for the flimsy boot floor as there is an inch or so gap between it and the wheel. If it was as sturdy as the MK2 boot floor I don't think it would be a problem. Thanks Honda for saving a few pennies here and making things more difficult.

It is not Honda's fault if you buy a DIY spare wheel and it does not support the boot floor. Honda's kit fits perfectly and supports the boot floor.

Buy a piece of foam to sit on top of wheel and glue some hardboard on top, or maybe just the foam will do it if it is firm enough.

I bought a Honda kit for my MK2 but it was one of those space-saver wheels and I wasn't going to spend £100+ on another one of those kits. Whilst this may be a DIY job, I would rather have a full size spare.

When you finally get around to upgrading your Jazz to a MK3 I will be interested to know what option you choose a) rely on the supplied bottle of gunk b) buy a Honda space-saver kit for £100+ or c) buy a full size spare and do a bit of DIY?

Your new Jazz will cost you many thousands of pounds over its time with you, why begrudge £100 for a spare wheel kit that fits the car? You could sell your random wheel and jack. It is spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

PS

The tyre pump and bottle of glue also fit in the correct floor support along with the tools, jack, user manual wallet, and a few other bits of your choice.

But like the MK2 kit - the MK3 kit it includes a space-saver wheel? If so I've been there and done that and don't want another space-saver. I would rather have a full size spare and that's the choice I've made the second time around. If your kit includes a space-saver and are happy with its limitations then that's fair enough.

I would argue that it's Honda is spoiling the MK3 ship for a ha'porth of tar by not keeping the MK2 arrangement of providing a sturdy boot floor with a carpeted under floor boot storage area should you be happy with the gunk and not require a spare. Best of both worlds.

PS May I ask how much you paid for your MK3 spare wheel kit?

I think I can avoid yet another rant over what Honda did with the boot floor on the Mk3. Took what was a clever and innovative storage arrangement and destroyed it

The Mk2 had:

* A carpeted wheel well.
* A solid floor that could support pretty much any load you cared to put in the boot.
* The floor, although supportive, had a flap that gave access to a small cargo net area underneath.
* The floor could either lift up completely or could hinge in the middle with catches to keep it hinged while you accessed the main well area.

The Mk3 has a bit of felt covered hardboard and on my version at least they've not even painted over the primer.

The Jazz sells on its amazing storage capacity. And Honda went and ruined one of the more clever solutions they'd come up with.

It was discounted as part of the deal when I bought my 2016 car £50, I transferred it to my 2018 car. I think the full price is about £100.

The spare wheel is a bit academic anyway, I have the five year warranty and care package, so five years of AA cover, and they carry multifit spare wheels. I have had one slow puncture in the last decade or so.

I was quoted £250  for the 2018 spare wheel kit - again this would be a tyre saver.....

Do AA not charge if they were to swap your wheel with one of theirs during a puncture swapout?

This outfit is usually competitive on price although there is no floor support on their website. It might be worth giving them a phone. They are a Honda main dealer so should be able to quote a price.

When I ordered  a set of rubber mats from them they also sent me a CRV spare wheel kit I did not order! They did arrange a courier to collect it. :-)

If a full size spare fits get one - driving on the spacesaver (done it twice) is not an experience I wish to repeat.  My only gripe with Civic is that although my Civic wheel well is deep enough and long / wide enough for a full size spare the way you have to wriggle the spare in under a lip at the front means that it has to enter the wheel well at an angle and because the wheel is bigger across the diagonal corners means it won't go in - I could loose the air out and it might,  but that defeats the object of having an inflated spare.

I agree a full sized spare is a good idea if you are a regular long distance driver or do a long commute but the average jazz owner mainly uses their car for short journeys. A space saver is for temporary use, less than 50 miles, at less than 50 mph. Adequate for most, when are you further than 50 miles from a tyre shop?

I paid £196 two years ago for the complete Honda mk3 spacesaver kit from the main dealer where I bought the car.  I decided to do so because the one I had in my mk2 was a 20 year old ex Rover 45 one, unused, and also of course I had to solve the irritating boot floor support problem.

It is also worth remembering that a space saver should only be used on the rear of a front wheel drive car. So a bit of wheel swappery may be required in the case of a front puncture.

I was speaking with someone recently who had a puncture on a five lane section of the M25 where there was no hard shoulder. He hit debris and damaged a sidewall so glue no use and discovered he had no spare, it was his car!

The owners manual says that?

No but common sense and informed advice does.

I have a full size, spare. Jack, tools etc, fit nicely in the wheel.
I have recycled some cedarwood battens, from an old greenhouse, to support the boot floor.

Not a pretty sight. But functional, and lightweight.......

(https://s25.postimg.cc/b8hryn6xb/IMG_20180619_150400.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

The wheel slopes downward, compared to floor. Consequently, cross battens are different thicknesses.

I opted for the spare wheel from the Honda dealer for my 2018 Jazz. You do get a space saver. The tools to change the wheel over and you get to keep the inflation pump and tyre repair kit. All of it fits into the correct new shape piece of foam. It was £250 but I hope to have the car for around 10 years use so I decided it was worth getting the official one. The boot carpet ends up been nice and level.

That's the way I would go if I was buying a new car. Make do and mend is fine with an old banger, but if you buy a new car you want the real thing. £250 is small fry compared with the cost of the car.

So the spare spacer saver fits under a new style foam insert? Does the foam fit snuggly over the spare wheel, I guess so? If its like that ill prob buy it. But ill end up with the original foam with no resale value probably  :(

Put the redundant under floor storage thing in your garage, shed, loft, under your stairs or wherever then put it in the car when you trade it in or sell it. You keep the spare wheel kit. Mine went into my 2016 trade in and I kept the spare wheel kit for this car.

Yes the new foam fits snug. The dealer fitted ours so we never got the old foam to have to store away.

The dealer kept it to go in a trade in Jazz that has had its spare wheel kit retained for a future purchase.

Thanks for all who contributed to this thread - Enabled me to make an informed decision.
I bought an ex demo 1.5 Jazz Sport Navi (manual), having had a Civic 1.8 SE Plus, and I'm loving it.
Enquired the price of a space saver and was quoted £235 fitted at one dealer, and £280 at another.
After reading the info on this forum I emailed Cox's for their prices, and was quoted:-
a/  £302.25 for the spacesaver and all the attachments, foam etc
b/  £155.60 for a full sized alloy with Bridgestone Tyre
c/  £194.82 for alloy, tyre, jack and wrench
All the above with free delivery.
I went for option b as I already have a jack and wrench from the Civic.
Fits in the boot lovely. Bit of hardboard and polystyrene packing and the boot floor is stable.
Hope I never have to use the wheel, but it gives a better peace of mind than the puncture repair kit!

https://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/honda-shop/genuine-honda-jazz-full-size-alloy-spare-wheel-tyre-2016/

Hope this helps anyone that's thinking of a spare wheel.

Yes, excellent work. Love quality diy creative fixes.

FYI, you could upgrade your jump leads to a battery starter like this (just an example), price has jumped up since I brought it but it saves having to rely on anyone else - just a thought. Worked on my Jazz mk1 a treat the one time I sat in the car with the AC on with the engine off  :'(

The Aircon can't be on with the engine off, the engine drives the Aircon compressor. You would only have had the fan on.

Yeah, you are prob right as the compressor was not turning on and off. Fan and radio were both on and prob the battery was the original one.

Living here in Orkney where we have to be somewhat self sufficient and often needing to get to or from a ferry, we decided to go down the winter tyre/wheel route.  We just bought a set of 4 genuine Honda steel wheels with Bridgestone Blizzaks (had those before and love ‘em) which have done under 500 miles, all for £190!  So we can have a full size steel spare when the alloys are on and full size alloy spare when the steelies are on - result.  Plus we still have the gunk and compressor.  Belt, braces and a piece of string!

Bought one off ebay with the correct part number and had 2016 in its description. But, the foam not right as it doesn't have the cut outs shown in an earlier picture for the floppy floor securing points. So returning it  :(
