In both cars, petrol is the only source of energy.  So improved mpg comes only from running the engine in the most efficient way, and energy recovery while braking.  70 mpg sounds extreme, and certainly not achievable on the North Circular!

I think that the Yaris is a size smaller vehicle than the Jazz so I would expect a better mpg irrespective of the hybrid system. Another factor is that Toyota coupled their hybrid systems with an Atkinson cycle petrol engine which increases the fuel efficiency at the expense of performance. However, more ccs plus a more powerful electric motor than used in the Jazz's IMA system more than offsets the reduced engine performance.

As an aside, Honda used a part Atkinson cycle engine in the Mk 3 Jazz and this is somewhat gutless at the lower end of the rev range but is very economical if driven at a steady 40 mph https://www.theaa.com/about-us/newsroom/fuel-economy-record-attempt. A hybrid would struggle to achieve this mpg under those conditions as the battery adds to the weight but provides little benefit.

The new Honda CR-V hybrid uses a much bigger 2 litre engine running in Atkinson mode, mainly acting as a generator.  Presumably this design philosphy will feed through into a new Jazz hybrid in due course.

Toyotas have a lot more experience of hybrids, i quite liked the automatic hybrid yaris when i tried one but it's noticibly smaller inside than the Jazz.

I found the Yaris too small and dark, the Auris is a bit big, but like the 3 bears, the Corolla might be perfect for my next tuition car.

I am pretty sure with the my hybrid Jazz (2014) you could get 500 miles to a complete tank full (40litres). In my normal Jazz 1.4EX I can get over 100 after the fuel light comes on giving the normal a range of about 400 miles. So far in the Hybrid Jazz I have had close to 500 before I bottled out and refuelled. The fuel light came on at about 400. Another time when I am close to that again and the conditions are suitable and safe I will take petrol with me and run it until it stops and report an example of an absolute range. BTW if you turn off the ECO and put gear shift to S (for second, according to the book) you too can get over 117, but consumption obviously suffers for that period, but it drives like a go kart and is fantastic. Off to Europe again in Jazz for D-Day anniversary.

I regularly get 410 - 450, before the light comes, on in my non-hybrid Jazz.

Hello, I hope everyone is well.

As an update, I have done just over 1,000 miles in my Jazz now, which has resulted in 3 full tanks of petrol.

Observations:

1. I could never really get more than about 32 litres into my tank

2. The on board computer MPG vs. real world tank to tank method seemed to vary by 6% to 11%

3. The very best I could manage, driving like an absolute saint was a real world 52.3MPG (on board screen showed 56.4, so a difference of 8%)

4. The journeys were all very similar - some congested stop start traffic but also some A roads with cruise control on 40mph due to roadworks and average speed cameras

5. My average for the 3 tank fulls is as follows;
48.5MPG (screen showed 51.3MPG)
52.3MPG (screen showed 56.4MPG)
50.5MPG (screen showed 56.1MPG)

Summary: the Hybrid Jazz in mixed conditions, in mild weather, does a real world 50MPG

Another update - managed 424 miles on a full tank this month, which is a real world 57.5MPG (computer showed 62.4, so +8% over read). I drove about 10 to 12 miles once the orange light went on and probably could have done more but was a little nervous, so stopped to fill the car up. 33.4 litres went in, so there was a good gallon at the bottom there somewhere!

At £1.26 a litre that's about 9p a mile which is damn impressive.

Granted we have had some very warm weather in Aug and the journeys were mostly A road stuff at 40 mph, overall its a brilliant little car, glad I joined the club folks!

:)

3 out of the last 4 of my top ups have been more than 470 miles. And I don't have a hybrid!

OK, I'm gonna keep a 5 litre fuel can in the back of the car for next time in order to try and beat my record, I might stretch to 450 I think (fuel tank capacity is 40 and I only managed to pump in 33 litres so at least a gallon left in there somewhere).
