Honda Jazz Servicing

We’ve had our Jazz for 2.5 years, bought as a pre-reg with 600 miles on the clock at 6 months old. It doesn’t do a great mileage and has just had its’ first MOT at just over 25000 miles along with a service. Although the first two services were relatively cheap, this one hurt a bit at £350 (dealer service) [+ another £50 for the MOT], due to the tappets being scheduled for adjustment. I must admit that I haven’t adjusted a tappet since my 78 Midget some years ago. Why do Honda persist with adjustable tappets instead of hydraulic lifters?

That said, I would complement the dealers, Saunders Honda of Chester. Collected the car and delivered it back. Rang me to discuss the car and tell me it was ready and delivered it back washed and vacuumed. Service sheet also contained notes on condition of tyres, windscreen wipers, brake pads etc. Impressive level of service for a main dealer!

The tappets used to be adjusted every two years, but now its only done every 25k irrespective of age. t two years old my Jazz had done 22,000miles and I was told to wait until the car reached 25,000 before adjusting the tappets! I would think having the whole lot done at the same time would be cheaper.

£350 is one of the cheaper prices - one dealer quoted me £425 for the 2nd annual service+tappets!

Does the 1.4 Civic need the same treatment?

Almost certainly, it’s exactly the same engine as the Jazz.

It is an 8 valve, 8 spark plug unit designed for low emissions. The 2nd plug fires slightly after the 1st I believe. The plugs are also changed at 25,000 miles.

to reply to comical engineer.
Honda at Chiswick say that the civic and jazz 1.4 engines are totally different.
I don’t know, except I havent heard of one honda civic EGR valve needing replacement because of a honda problem…

I beg to differ.

http://www.buyacar.co.uk/technicalSpeci ... 3817.jhtml

No. of valves = 8 with SOHC. Bore & stroke same as Jazz 1.4. Capacity (actual) = 1339 cc - Same as Jazz. compression ration 10.8:1 same as Jazz

You may be thinking of the previous model which had a 1.4 16V engine but the new one has the same 8V 8 sparkplug engine as the Jazz.

Yeh I agree these days virtually all engines have hydraulic tappets with the main advantage that they dont need adjusting

So why do honda have adjustable tappets???

"So why do honda have adjustable tappets???"

I've always thought the reason why Honda don't use hydraulic tappets, is perhaps a benefit to improved engine reliability.

According to my service schedule sent to me with my service reminder, the valve clearance is inspected and adjusted every 62,500 miles for Jazz 06-on.

The Jazz is serviced every 12,500miles or one year, which ever comes first. If you do less then 12,500miles per year, you will still need to have the car serviced once a year.

The services alternate on a minor/major pattern, with minor serving conducted at the 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc, service, and major serving at 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc, service.

Cambelt Change

The Jazz uses a timing chain instead of a timing/cam belt which does not need changing.

Transmission Fluid

The transmission fluid is changed every 75,000miles/8 years for manual transmission and then again every 50,000miles or four years.

The CVT fluid is changed every 50,000miles/5 years and every 37,500miles/4 years thereafter.

Valve Clearance (Tappet Adjustment)

On 2002-2005 cars the valve clearance is inspected and (if required) adjusted every 25,000miles. On 2006-on cars, this is not required until 62,500miles. This is always conducted on mileage.

Spark Plugs

All eight spark plugs are replaced every 25,000miles.
