I changed mine a few months ago to fit aftermarket LED lights (they've been great over Winter!)

and YES, what an absolute pain! It took me over an hour to do the drivers side, and about 15 minutes to do the passenger side. Mostly because I had learned the process on the drivers side, and there's more room on the passengers side.

I went in through the wheel arches. I've heard it's possible to turn the wheel and gain access. I removed the wheels for more space, and I believe it was helpful.

I would pay Halfords the £16.90, bring some warm clothes and a bag of popcorn and watch them struggle away. They will have earned that £16.90  ;D
