Servicing
« on: February 19, 2018, 05:03:47 PM »
I've just had the 2nd year service after 19750 miles, under the 5 years for £555 plan, so I had nothing to pay.  However, I was surprised to see that the itemised invoice totalled £240.54 + VAT, i.e. £288.65.  This included £45.74 +VAT for CVT fluid and £31.45+VAT for Syntium 7000 0W20 oil.  There were also new oil and pollen filters.  Last year they used Castrol Edge H oil at £43.20+VAT, and also added Wurth petrol additive, whatever that is, which doesn't feature this time.  I wonder why the changes?
The overall notional cost seems high, and I'm very pleased I bought the service plan if that's what I would have been charged otherwise.

They get stuff at trade prices,  multiply cost x 4 and that is the price they put on your invoice.  I borrowed a mates Halfrauds trade card once and was truly shocked at how much the 'marked' prices came down.
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

My Jazz has had a few services, and its first 5 were also on the service plan, the costs were roughly, 1st service £165, 2nd £260, 3rd £165, 4th £260, 5th £165, however the 6th service cost me £600 (that does include 8x spark plugs). I have managed to get it down to £450 on more recent services.

The other interesting thing is Honda's 3 years plus charges. In short you pay through the nose for your first 3 services then move on to a fixed menu price. £165 and £265 (or thereabouts) - the £265 includes brake fluid and filters.

Quite cynical really. They fleece you whilst the car is under warranty (even though you can now go elsewhere many are nervous about doing so). Then, not wishing to lose the business once the car is out of warranty, they cut the prices to a more reasonable level. I'm sure all other manufacturers do similar.

Does it have to be serviced by Honda?

No - the law changed some time ago and you can take the car to an independent garage providing they use the right specification parts and fluids and adhere to the service schedule. This will preserve your warranty. Nevertheless I think a lot of people might still be worried about going elsewhere.

I have used a non-Honda garage twice, but they couldn't reset the CVTF service interval, so I had to go back to Honda with my tail between my legs and request that they reset it, which they did, much to their amusement.

There's all sorts of stuff going on.  Quite a few marques sell service contracts now so the price of the early services is inflated so as to make the service contracts look like good value.  Also a high percentage of new cars are leased to companies and the lease providers don't pay anything like "rack" rate for servicing.

I guess my point is, how good can an oil change be? But that said, if you don't have a decent garage in your area then it could be safer to take it to Honda.

You'll find a dozen decent garages in any urban or semi-urban area, here in the UK. Just ask friends and family for recommendations. I delivered to small garages, here in Fife, and they are everywhere. Places you would never expect and never find unless you were looking for them. From the middle of fields to the back of cemeteries! Some are even mechanics, running a business from garages attached to their house.
