Brake disc scoring
« on: February 16, 2018, 07:24:50 PM »
Hi

Please could someone have a quick look at the picture of a rear brake disc which appears to be scored and hopefully answer why it is like that

There is no noise but this is the only disc which has this scoring.

Our car has now covered 24,500 miles

Many thanks

John

Looks like you have picked up some grit.  Any unpaved roads there?  Plenty here and discs like that are not uncommon

Hi chrisc

Many thanks

Yes, our road is private and not tarmac covered

It just seemed weird that it is only one disc and the scoring distance I thought might be the wear indicator

Many thanks, much appreciated

I think the break pad wear indicator makes  lot of noise but does very little damage to the disk. None that wouldn't soon polish out by the new pads when braking :)

As above, looks like you've picked up some grit on the pads. If it were the wear indicator you would know about it!

It will probably sort itself out over time.

Hi

Many thanks for all replies. It’s appreciated thank you

I do have a silly question though, which I thought about after reading the answers

Would I need a new disc

I apologize for my lack of mechanical knowledge

Many thanks in advance

Personally, I wouldn't replace it. It may slightly shorten the life of the pads, but not by a great deal, especially as it is a rear disc. £30 will get new discs but if you have to pay for fitting that will soon add up. I would just live with it and keep an eye on pad wear.
