Some ODB2 scan tools don't work with Jazz 2009 EX?
« on: September 11, 2018, 07:42:16 PM »
I have two ODB2 scan tools, the simpler older one is an Autel MaxiScan MS300 which always worked fine on a 2002 Honda Stream 2.0 but always shows "Link Error!" on the Jazz after slowly going through all the ISO9141, KWP2000, CAN2, etc protocols.

My other one is a much newer and more complex Konnwei KW590 which does work.

So what has changed with ODB2 that would make a 2009 Jazz ODB2 connection fail, using equipment that worked on a 2002 Stream?

Curiously too, when my wife called out the AA man for our Stream when both the cam timing sensors had failed, his WiFi ODB2 system could not read the Stream codes, but my cheap old Autel reader worked immediately (3141 if I remember correctly)...?

The new MaxiScan MS300 works with all OBD II protocols, including the newly released Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. Perhaps your model predates the Controller Area Network protocol.
I believe the Mk 2 Jazz introduced Canbus.

This is an interesting point from a recent reply to another similar thread on this board:

https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?topic=10371.msg62661#msg62661

"...bought it to work with a Ford using the J1850 PWM protocol but it wouldn't connect to the ECU - despite the protocol being listed in the spec. I took it apart and found that the pins weren't even wired up for it - different protocols use different pins in the OBD plug."

Opening up the Autel plug, (looking toward the plug pin ends, wide side upwards) only pins 2, 3, 4&5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 15 are wired.

The Konnwei plug is moulded plastic so can't be opened up. However, if you open up the main case and disconnect the plug from the circuit board you can safely do continuity testing on the pins (numbered in small digits inside the plug).

It turns out that exactly the same pins are wired as the Autel - although for some strange reason the 8 same colours in the two cables are connected to different pins in their plug.

In small print on the Konnwei plug below the "OBD2" label on the plug it says "IEC 2009". Maybe that is an important difference to the Autel.
