Updating maps on 'Here' satnav
« on: March 18, 2025, 12:11:48 PM »
Sorry if this  has been covered before.  I'm looking to do a full map  update on the  'Here' satnav.  The instructions say use a Fat32 formatted flash drive with 64 gb or more storage space.

My 64 gb memory is formatted as exfat .  To format this to fat32 on a windows computer it seems I need to use third party software.  (more stuff  for my human memory to learn  - and thats  formatted as 'extra' FAT  ;D   :-[ )

But 64 GB seems very large. IIRC I was able to update the Garmin satnav maps  using a 16gb flash drive.
Has anyone successfully updated Here maps using only a  32 GB stick, or can suggest another work round that will save me needing to  fully embrace the 21st century?

A HERE map update requires a 32Gb USB formatted to FAT32

Actual map size is around 22Gb

I’m pretty sure that exfat won’t work as it’s a different architecture

The 64GB stick looks too big so I’d stick to a 32GB one instead but it definitely needs to be formatted using FAT32. Unfortunately I’m completely out of touch with Windows machines so can’t give you a solution

I was always told that you can’t format to FAT32 using a MAC but I proved that wrong by formatting it using the Master Boot Record setting in the MAC and successfully updated my vehicle sat nav etc

This may help you.

Just what I need. Thanks.    I had consulted a different 'Here' Navigation pdf downloaded from Honda that said 64 gb.      (see clip photo )

if you do want to format 64G to Fat32 in windows I have used this for years and can recommend it.

https://www.fat32format.com/

I use it on 256G and 512G flash drives that have films on them to play on older portable video players that can't recognise exFat or NTFS.

Get a 32Gb stick as the format allocation units may be different and the head unit is very picky
Let's be careful out there !

I updated the nav using the link recommended by Steve, all went well using a 32G stick, it was the easiest nav update I have done

I’ve updated 2 HERE UK map regions by linking direct to my home WiFi router. It tells you to leave the engine running while downloading and then updating, but it doesn’t take long. However I still can’t get the system WiFi to connect with my iPhone hotspot for traffic info, so I’m using Waze and Apple CarPlay instead, which works well.

Just done a full map update. Success  ;D    Its fundamentally similar to updating the Garmin, but there is more data so downloading maps on line  to the  stick then uploading them to the car takes a bit longer.

To reassure those who may be a bit nervous  here is what happened to a not particularly tech savvy baby boomer.  Stop reading now if you're confident  :D

I formatted a 32 gb fat 32 stick .   I then inadvertently inserted the stick into the charging only socket on the  car, not the data one  :-[   When I tried to download the' map download portal site ' file from the car to the stick it did not ,as you might expect, inform me there was no USB stick, but said it had exported it successfully. But the stick was empty .

When I realised my mistake it downloaded the link file to the stick which ,when inserted in a computer, takes you to the 'official' Honda download site  - administered by 'Here'.    It then required you to enter the  car Chassis number' and map version date.  I had expected the site to already know this from the link file.   You also have to download and install the 'Here ' updater on your computer.  Probably only for the first time you update ,much like you do with  Garmin Express.

My car was  registered in September 2024.  The installed map version was dated 2023.06.28 . The site said I would get maps dated 2024.09.26 . In fact I got maps dated  2024.12.18 .

A couple of slight anomalies.  The site said you get 5 years free updates from date of registration  (or for a fee after that)   But my expiry date, was 23.10.2029  . Which suggests that if you try to update maps immediately on purchase the car may not yet be registered with 'Here' for its free updates.   The instructions say 22 gb free space required.  Site said the update needed over 23 gb,.

As with the Garmin  downloading maps  to the stick can take well over an hour depending on your  internet speed.   The car display says uploading from stick to car takes 40 minutes. It actually took 44 minutes.
Quite a bit longer than the same stage on Garmin.
