Hello from Cape Town
« on: January 21, 2021, 04:21:47 PM »
Hi all,

I have a 2007 Jazz GD1 CVT that I got back in Jan 2016 with 162k km on the odo, it now has 212k and still runs like a dream with just routine maintenance so far.

I've joined to hopefully get some technical info..... I shall post a new topic in the relevant section shortly.

Is yours a 1.5Vtec or 1.4DSI?

1.4 DSI. Mostly commuting and errands about town, although it's done a few longer trips over the years.

Welcome. The DSi is a much more willing engine than the later VTEC engines. Torque is low down. On a flat road, my 1.2 will pull from 1000 rpm in 5th, as long as you are gentle on the throttle.

The low-down torque is mostly why I bought it vs the 1.5 VTEC..... it was intended to be for short trips about town and commuting over shortish distance, Works great for that...  :)

As far as I recall when comparing their torque curve the 1.5Vtec has more torque than the 1.4DSI throughout the rev range but lower down in the curve they are very similar.

My 1.5Vtec pulls from down low and the top end is very impressive, couldn't ask for better.

My previous GE 2012 1.3 CVT (same 1339cc engine as the Jazz badged as a 1.4) was a dog, there was no grunt.

I do remember driving a GD 1.4dsi CVT and being very impressed with the low down power, only issue is at highway speeds it had a lot of CVT whine whereas my 1.5 has almost none.

I agree,  I drive my wifes MK2 1.4 ivtec more than she does ( if she is in the car with me I always get directed to the driving seat LOL ) and miss the sheer driveability of the I-DSi engine in the MK1s we had,  but then again I can always use the Civic.  My wife wishes she had the iDSi engine in the MK2.  The gap between 1st and 2nd on iVtec is much to big considering the iVtec will not pull the skin off a rice pudding below 2500 revs, pull out from a standstill onto a hill and be prepared to rev the nuts off before attempting second gear.  I ( and my wife agrees ) have found that filling up with 97 or ( 99 from Tesco when she goes shopping ) seems to ease the situation and car seems more 'tractable' ...

But that being said my GE 1.3 CVT pulled liked mad when you floored it, pretty impressive on the freeway too.

Low and moderate power missing though, it's seems like they use the hydraulic torque converter more in the gearing because it had terrible slipping clutch vibe(that everyone moans about with CVT) at medium acceleration.

The 1.5Vtec has almost has no slipping clutch feel, just a nice engine burble.

It's the best engine no doubt but the trade off is you dont get the DSI's amazing fuel efficiency(+ double the plugs and coils to replace ) but it's still not bad. It looks like I'll be getting just above 7L/100km, mixed highway and urban.

My 1.2 i-DSi returns, over four and a half years, an average of 5.1 L/100 km.

That is phenomenal but it's not without a fair effort on your part and that's also the 1.2 and manual.

If I can consistently get around 7L on my 1.5 auto I'll be well happy.
