A Police friend of mine told me that new BMW's have a system, via a sensor located in the engine bay, that when it detects fire unlocks all the doors.

Thieves have found a way, using a pocket lighter, to trigger this sensor which gives them access to the interior and boot.
Let's be careful out there !

Fortunately, we drive cars that are not exactly popular with the Thieves Guild.
They pass a Jazz without glancing at it, looking for a Toyota RAV4 or equivalent...

That's what I don't get. Manufacturer's providing easy key free access and no ignition barrel but then you have to dismantle a steering wheel device and store it somewhere.

Slower to get moving.
Let's be careful out there !

They're not that secure. They usually have an easily picked (as in less than 5 seconds with a wave rake) wafer lock. (Think early 1970s British Leyland locks.) And if they have a ratchet mechanism, you can defeat that with a thin bit of metal (eg. a bit cut from a drink can).
