Dashcam recommendations please
« on: January 03, 2023, 10:18:29 AM »
I'm thinking I need a dashcam. Is there a good quality system that also has wireless connection to a rear camera so I do not need to run an internal data cable? Local power to the rear camera shouldn't be too tricky.

I've never heard of a wireless rear dashcam. The Nextbase models with a plug in front module thast points backwards generates a lot of problem posts.

What does seem to be a recurring theme on DashcamTalk is the problems posted with 2 cameras front/rear writing to a single SDCard.

I've stuck with just a front dashcam that should highlight any issues if I do get a rear shunt as it will show I wasn't reversing or slammed on the brakes for example.
Let's be careful out there !

I've been undertaken quite a lot recently; I thought it would good to be able report vehicles that dodge in and out of lanes and undertake.

PS. I know it is legal to pass a vehicle on their left, (slow side in the UK) if their lane starts to go slower than your lane.

Yes, I've seen that as well but I'm only really interested about those that do it to me, dangerously.

Here is a sample from my Viofo A119 V3 :

This a 500Mb+ sample to download as that's the only true way of evaluating it :

When it comes to the white Peugeot van (WF 65 OXV) I would not consider it dangerous. Maybe as a bit annoying.

Is that the one that overtook then slowed down ?

I was sat at 50 on the Jazz LIM function so trying to keep a steady speed in the average speed zone. When I looked in his cab I remember he was looking at a phone.

I just use two separate dashcams. I have a Viofo A119 V3 looking forward and my old Nextbase 512G looking back.

I've just bought a Viofo 119 Mini after quite a lot of recommendations on here and elsewhere for the Viofo 119 V3, which seems to be a reliable and stable dashcam with several years of production. I only really went for the Mini to get the wi-fi and voice prompt features, there are one or two other minor menu options, technically they are similar otherwise.
I did consider the issue of front/rear cameras and decided like Jocko that if I want a rear cam I'll fit a separate one, quite possibly a V3.
I posted in another thread that after some trepidation I ordered from Viofo direct (China) https://viofo.com/  due to good price reduction compared to either the UK outlet or other retailers. The order and delivery went seamlessly with excellent tracking info updated daily, order to delivery took only a little over a week. If you do order from abroad bear in mind the customs limit of £135, my order was just below this so there was no duty to pay, simple Post Office delivery. For example they have the V3 dashcam at under £80 at present (it varies with exchange rates), You might want to consider a hardwire kit and polarising filter but you can get away without, just using the supplied USB adapter kit. Note there is no SD card supplied, I bought a dashcam durable type elsewhere (Picstop, Sandisk 128 https://www.picstop.co.uk/dash-cam-memory.html , it's always worth registering for blurb as you usually get a 10% discount code or similar).

I just powered mine from a battery pack. Lasts for several days on a charge. I plug it in before leaving in the morning. and unplug it again when I return at night.

Re power to a rear camera: is there a permanent feed for a boot light?

There will be a permanent live in the vicinity of the light/to the light which is probably switched by earthing the return.

Just a heads up that Viofo have a sale on at the moment, only a couple more days (20th Mar).
e.g. 119 V3 at £70 round figures, and 119 Mini at £83
A bit of discount on hardwire kits/polarisers etc if bought with the cam
